COACHING ACCOMPLISHMENTS
• Cal's defense allowed opponents an average of 22.5 points per game during his eight seasons at Cal, the second-best mark in the Pac-10 behind only USC during that time.
• In 14 seasons as a Football Bowl Subdivision coach, Gregory's teams have never had a losing record and have participated in 12 bowl games, including seven during his Cal tenure.
• Cal's 2008 defense ranked third in the nation with 24 interceptions, the team's most since 1948 and also third-most in school history, while adding Top 10 national rankings in red zone defense (68.2%, No. 2), turnovers gained (34, No. 4-T), pass efficiency defense (98.44, No. 6) and third down conversions percentage defense (30.96%, No. 10).
• In 2006, Gregory's defense allowed just 19.3 points per game while forcing 28 turnovers, including 21 interceptions (fifth in the nation).
• The Bears held Texas A&M to a Holiday Bowl-low 10 points in 2006, including just 349 yards of total offense (146 in the second half).
• Cal's 2005 defense led the Pac-10 in pass efficiency defense, while ranking second in the league in scoring defense (21.2 ppg), rushing defense (119.2 ypg) and total defense (359.6 ypg).
• Finalist for the 2004 Frank Broyles Award, which is given to the nation's top assistant coach.
• His 2004 defense ranked in the Top 25 nationally in three categories: rushing defense (2nd, 82.5 ypg), scoring defense (8th, 16.0 ppg) and total defense (24th, 320.9 ypg).
• Cal's 2004 defense blanked Arizona (38-0) and Arizona State (27-0) in back-to-back games - a first for the Bears since the 1968 season.
• In 2002, Cal ranked second in the country in fumble recoveries (21) and seventh in both turnover margin (+21) and total takeaways (36).
• His 2001 Boise State team finished second in the WAC in both scoring and rushing defense.
• As defensive backs coach at Oregon, the 2000 Ducks led the NCAA in pass efficiency defense.
• Named the American Football Quarterly Defensive Coordinator of the Year after the 1997 season, when his Willamette squad led the NAIA in scoring defense and total defense.
PROMINENT PUPILS
• Tyson Alualu (California) - Defensive end was a first-team All-Pac-10 choice in 2009; recorded the best two season tackle totals by a Cal defensive lineman with 65 in 2009 and 62 in 2008 since Duane Clemons posted 82 in 1995.
• Nnamdi Asomugha (California) - Defensive back was a first round draft choice by Oakland Raiders in 2003; earned first-team All-Pro honors in 2008, as well as second-team honors in 2009; a three-time Pro Bowl selection (2006, '08, '09).
• Rashad Bauman (Oregon) - Defensive back drafted in the third round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins after earning second-team All-Pac-10 and third-team All-American honors in 2000.
• Thomas DeCoud (California) - Safety selected in the third round by the Atlanta Falcons after standout Golden Bear career.
• Zack Follett (California) - Linebacker rapped up his Cal career by earning first-team All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and then was taken by Detroit in the seventh round of the 2009 NFL Draft; participated in 12 games as an NFL rookie for the Lions in 2009.
• Matt Giordano (California) - Safety taken in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft by Indianapolis, earning a Super Bowl Champion ring with the Colts in 2007; a current member of the Green Bay Packers; first-team All-Pac-10 in 2004.
• Daymeion Hughes (California) - Consensus first-team All-American as a cornerback in 2006; chosen in third round of 2007 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts and is a current member of the San Diego Chargers.
• Brandon Mebane (California) - Two-time All-Pac-10 first-team as a defensive tackle; selected in third round of 2007 NFL Draft by Seattle and has played in 47 of 48 possible games during his first three seasons with the Seahawks.
• Quintin Mikell (Boise State) - A current member of the Philadelphia Eagles who has played as a safety with the club for the last seven seasons (2002-09) after being signed by Philadelphia as an undrafted free agent in 2003.
• Syd'Quan Thompson (California) - Two-time All-Pac-10 choice; finished as Cal's all-time leader with 36 pass breakups and also set school record with 52 career starts.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS A PLAYER
• Played defensive back and linebacker at Washington State under head coach Jim Walden.
