LOS ANGELES --- In its first Top-15 battle of the season, the No. 14 California women's soccer team played the No. 10 UCLA Bruins to a 1-1 draw Thursday evening at Drake Stadium.
The Golden Bears (10-2-1, 3-0-1 Pac-12) extended their unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) but ended the contest with their first tie since November 6 of last season at Stanford.
"Our team played very well today against a tremendous UCLA team. Anytime you go up against a traditional powerhouse, the task is never going to be easy but I'm proud of how the ladies played today," head coach
Neil McGuire said after the game.
Redshirt senior
Ifeoma Onumonu put Cal on the board first in the 16
th minute on the tail end of a perfectly executed transition run. After corralling a goal kick from junior keeper
Emily Boyd, senior
Emma Fletcher found a clear path to cross midfield and sent a through ball down the right side toward freshman forward
Abigail Kim. The speedy newcomer was able to beat her defender to the end and cross a ball in front of goal that senior forward
Arielle Ship ran past and Onumonu put home.
The tally was Onumonu's seventh of the year and 30
th of her career. By comparison, Kim's assist was the first ever for the Berkeley newcomer.
UCLA (9-2-1, 3-0-1 Pac-12) would not go quietly, continuing to create chances and test the Cal defense. With less than a minute between the Bears and a regulation victory, UCLA's Courtney Proctor scored the equalizer for the home team. Boyd was able to stop an initial shot from Proctor but the Bruin was able to make good on her second attempt.
The 20 minutes of extra soccer saw a handful of quality chances, with a sequence in the 105
th minute emerging as the most suspenseful. Boyd was able to make a pair of close-range saves in quick succession before helping Kim start a one-woman transition from the defensive midfield. With one defender to beat, Kim went to make a final move but had the ball deflected away at the last second.
Despite conceding the late goal, Boyd had one of the best performances of her Golden Bear career. Boyd stopped 11 UCLA shots – a career best and three shy of Karen Cook's all-time single-game record (vs. Washington State, 10/7/94).
"Emily was impressive in goal tonight. She made a few saves that really stood out but overall she played extremely well," McGuire said.
