Bears Reach SMC Doubles Finals
MORAGA, Calif. – California put two teams in doubles finals and three Golden Bears in singles semifinals on Saturday at the Saint Mary's Invitational.
Playing in the top flight at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex, the top-seeded freshman pair of
Vivian Glozman and
Anna Bright beat San Francisco's fourth-seeded Shanna Dos Santos and Emily Maxfield, 8-0, in the semifinals to advance. In the B flight semifinals, senior
Audrey Mayer and freshman
Jasie Dunk upset San Jose State's second-seeded Savannah Sendar and Julie Vereecke, 8-2.
Bright and junior teammate
Maria Smith won twice in A-flight singles to set up a semifinal meeting between the Bears on Sunday. In the round of 16, the second-seeded Bright topped UC Santa Barbara's Amit Lev-Ari, 6-1, 6-1, and the fifth-seeded Smith defeated the Gaels' Aubane Ville, 6-3, 6-2. In the quarterfinals, Smith upset Fresno State's third-seeded Katerina Stloukalova, 6-4, 6-2, and Bright advanced past Kareena Manji of Saint Mary's, 3-6, 6-4, 3-0 ret. (inj.).
Cal sophomore
Alexis Nelson, playing in the A Singles consolation bracket, fell in the first round, to San Jose State's Miyo Kobayashi, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0(3).
In the B Singles main draw, the seventh-seeded Dunk bested Eastern Washington's Valentina Sottile, 6-0, 6-3, in the round of 16 and then knocked off the Spartan's Vereecke, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, in the quarters. In the B back draw, Mayer got past USF's eighth-seeded Dos Santo in walkover (inj.) in the first round and had a bye in the second round. But Mayer lost to Eastern Washington's Stephanie Broussard, 7-5, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
The Saint Mary's Invitational concludes on Sunday.
