Callender Earns POW Conference Honor

BERKELEY – The Golden Bears continue to reap the benefits of a double-overtime win against Portland on Saturday night. Besides the excitement from landing on the right side of a hard-fought victory, starting goalkeeper Drake Callender was named Pac-12 Player of the Week on Tuesday, announced The Conference.

The Fair Oaks, Calif. native, earned his first collegiate player-of-the-week honor, and the first for California this season, after making a career-high nine saves against the Pilots in Portland over the weekend.

In a shootout, where both teams combined for 32 shots, Portland blasted 18 shots toward the Cal net, but Callender's acrobatic maneuvering prevented 9 of 10 shots on goal from entering. The sophomores' most critical save came on a penalty kick in the 90' against the Pilots lead scorer who scored the team's lone goal earlier in the night.

Callender's, whose 20 saves currently leads the league, incredible stop on the PK forced extended play, where the Bears found their footing and the net to win in the 103'.

"Drake had an excellent game this past weekend," said Cal coach Kevin Grimes. "His focus is all about improving and he continues to progress with that mindset each week. That's a great attribute to have."

Cal returns to action on Friday when the team hosts Yale at 4:30 p.m. (PT) on the Pac-12 Networks.
