BERKELEY – California won both of the top-flights doubles semifinals Saturday to assure the Golden Bears they'll win at least one title on the last day of the Cal Fall Invitational. The 11th-ranked pair of Cal veterans Karla Popovic and Olivia Hauger will take on freshmen teammates Anna Bright and Vivian Glozman in Sunday's 9 a.m. final at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

Popovic and Hauger first knocked off BYU's Anastasia Abramyan and Kate Cusik, 8-3, in Saturday's Blue flight quarterfinals before beating UCLA's Alaina Miller and Jada Hart, 8-7(5) in the semis. The first-year Cal duo defeated UCLA's Abi Altick and Terri Fleming, 8-5, in the quarters, before topping Kelsie Bryant and Kristi Jorgensen of UC Davis, 8-4, in the semis.

"We got off to another great start in doubles," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "We're pleased to have our two teams play each other in the top-flight final tomorrow. Our next team of Maria Smith and Jasie Dunk made the semis of the Gold flight, and that was great because they never played together before. I was happy with what we did in doubles today."

Bright also advanced to the top-flight singles semis after beating Hart, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2, in Saturday's Blue quarters. But Hauger, a junior seeded No. 1 in the Blue draw and ranked 75th nationally, lost in an upset to Miller in another quarterfinal, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2.

In the Blue singles consolation bracket, Glozman topped BYU's Samantha Smith, 6-2, 6-4, Saturday to reach Sunday's semis. Cal's Alexis Nelson was seeking a semifinal berth in the Gold consolation bracket, but the sophomore fell to Sacramento State's Sofia Gulnova, 5-7, 7-6, 1-0(7). Senior Audrey Mayer also sought a spot in the White consolation semis, but she lost to Fresno State's Abbey Watanabe, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(10), in Saturday's quarters.

Playing in consolation round-robin singles, Smith fell to UCLA's Gabby Andrews, 6-2, 6-2, while Dunk, a freshman, lost to Santa Clara's Zeina El Tawil, 6-2, 7-6.

"Anna had a really good day in singles," Augustus said. "But we had really good singles matches all the way around. Everyone got to compete today. We had some close three-setters, and some of the other players got some great consolation matches that went down to the wire. This is good experience. It's really important learning how to play in back to back days, because they'll do that again later on in the season, and we have one more day of our tournament tomorrow. Along with some of the finals tomorrow, we'll try to get more singles and doubles matches for everyone. That'll cap off a great weekend of tennis and kick off our season, and away we go from there."
