CORVALLIS, Oregon – Despite a season-high 24 shots, the Cal women's soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline on Thursday night, falling to Oregon State at Paul Lorenz Field. The physical and hard-fought match saw a total of nine yellow cards handed out between the two teams, as the Golden Bears (4-7-1, 0-4-0 Pac-12) came up short in their first road game of the 2018 Pac-12 campaign.
Luca Deza scored the game's opening goal for the Golden Bears in the 27
th minute, but the Beavers (2-10-0, 1-3-0 Pac-12) leveled the score less than two minutes later when Allison Pantuso converted a penalty kick to level the score at 1-1. Oregon State then took the lead for good in the 69
th minute, when Sydney Struder found the back of the net after a scramble in the box.
Cal outshot Oregon State, 24-12, on the evening and saw two goals waved off for offside calls in the second half.
Looking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Bears opened the match on the front foot, dictating play in the early stages of the match with several opportunities in their offensive third. Deza nearly broke the game open in the ninth minute, when she rifled a shot that bounced off the post and back into play. The sophomore from Belmont found the woodwork again in the 25
th minute, combing with striker
Abi Kim at the top of the box only to see her shot hit off the crossbar.
But in the 27
th minute the Bears finally broke through, converting off a set piece earned just outside the box.
Miranda Nild's service found a waiting Deza, who beat Oregon State goalkeeper Lindsay Lamont for her second goal of the year. It was the second assist of the season for Nild, who also registered an assist in Cal's non-conference finale vs UC Davis.
However, the Bears' lead was short-lived, as Oregon State was awarded a penalty kick in the 29
th minute after Cal was called for a foul in the box. Pantuso, a senior midfielder, stepped up to the spot and beat Cal goalkeeper
Amanda Zodikoff to level the score.
Zodikoff made three saves for the Bears while Lamont ended the game with seven saves for the Beavers.
With the score tied 1-1 at halftime, Cal had several promising opportunities in the opening stages of the second half but was unable to convert.
Emma Westin combined with freshman
Paige Metayer at the top of the box and got a shot off that was just inches wide of the post, while Deza narrowly missed a chance at the far post.
The Bears briefly appeared to have regained the lead in the 65
th minute when Kim beat Lamont after a beautiful combination with Nild and Deza, but the goal was called back for offside.
Oregon State took control just moments later, as Studer picked up a bouncing ball in the box after Oregon State's initial shot attempt was blocked. The freshman midfielder beat Zodikoff from close range to give the Beavers their first lead of the night.
Cal pushed for an equalizer and looked to have found it in the 86
th minute, but
Kayla Fong's shot was waved off as the offside flag was up once again.
The Bears ended the match with an 8-5 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
Cal will be back in action on Sunday, taking on Oregon (7-4-1, 1-3-0 Pac-12) at 1 p.m. PT. The Ducks dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 1 Stanford in overtime earlier on Thursday.
