Cal-Arizona Postgame Notes

Bears Fall In The Desert, 24-17

  • With the 24-17 loss, Cal falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the Pac-12. The Bears host UCLA next Saturday, with kickoff at 4 p.m. at California Memorial Stadium.
  • Brandon McIlwain made his first start at quarterback at Cal, and the fourth of his collegiate career (3 at South Carolina). Cal has now started three quarterbacks in a season for the first time since 2005. Ross Bowers started Cal's opener against North Carolina, while Chase Garbers started the next three games before tonight.
  • McIlwain finished the night 32-for-43 for 315 yards through the air, and rushed 20 times for 107 yards and two scores. His TDs came on runs of 25 and 23 yards, giving him four rushing touchdowns this year. McIlwain's two rushing touchdowns are the most by a Cal QB since Joe Ayoob rushed for three vs. New Mexico State in 2005.
  • McIlwain's 315 passing yards are a career best. His previous high came while he played at South Carolina when he threw for 195 yards against East Carolina as a freshman. His previous high at Cal was 123 yards last week vs. Oregon.
  • McIlwain also surpassed 100 yards on the ground for the second straight week after rushing for 123 yards vs. Oregon.
  • Both of Cal's first half scoring drives were seven plays for 75 yards.
  • Camryn Bynum picked off his first pass of the season and third of his career in the third quarter. The INT was Cal's eighth of the year. Bynum's first two career interceptions came against Washington State last year in Berkeley.
  • Ashtyn Davis registered his first career fumble recovery in the fourth quarter.
  • Moe Ways finished with a career-high 8 catches for 97 yards. His previous high was three catches.
  • Cal's defense allowed only 10 first-quarter points, as Arizona's two other scores came on defensive returns. Overall, the Bears limited Arizona to 265 total yards, the fewest allowed during Justin Wilcox's tenure as head coach. The previous low was 287 yards at BYU.
  • Jordan Kunaszyk finished with 11 tackles, the third time in his last four games he has recorded double-digit stops.
  • Malik Psalms recorded his first career sack in the first quarter.
  • Elijah Hicks recorded his fourth tackle for loss this season and the sixth of his career.
  • Addison Ooms has now started the last 29 consecutive games, the only member of the Cal team to do so, and the most since Jared Goff started every game in his career (37 games, 2013-15).
