BERKELEY – No. 20 California got eight kills apiece from senior
Maddie Haynes and junior
Preslie Anderson, but it wasn't enough as the Bears fell 17-25, 18-15, 24-26 to UCLA Friday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.
Cal drops to 20-5 overall and 10-5 in Pac-12 play, while UCLA improves to 14-10 and 9-6 in conference action.
The Bruins jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first, forcing a Cal timeout. Junior
Mima Mirkovic ended the UCLA run with a kill out of the timeout, but went down with an injury on the next point and didn't return for the remainder of the match.
In a back-and-forth final frame, the Bears answered an early Bruin run to take six of the next seven points and go ahead 11-10. Jump started by an appearance in the lineup by freshman
Deniz Milli due to the Mirkovic injury, Cal took a 16-13 lead on a service ace from Milli to force a UCLA timeout.
UCLA would answer out of the timeout with four of the next five points to tie it at 17 and make Cal take its second timeout. Tied at 24, the Bruins took the final two points of the set to close out the match and end the Bear comeback effort.
Cal honors six seniors on Sunday vs. USC who have put in multiple years of hard work and effort for the Bears. The group of six will be playing their final regular season match inside Haas Pavilion.Â
