Cal Claims National, Conference Honors
Brown Named Pac-12, ESPNW National Player of the Week, Lutje Schipholt Collects Freshman Honors
SAN FRANCISCO – After leading the Cal women's basketball team to an upset over No. 20 Arkansas, Cal senior
Jaelyn Brown has been named the
ESPNW National Player of the Week and the
Pac-12 Player of the Week, the outlets announced on Monday. Brown averaged 24.0 points and 10.5 rebounds per game in a pair of Golden Bear victories this weekend, highlighted by a 30-point, 12-rebound effort in Sunday's win over the Razorbacks. Teammate
Evelien Lutje Schipholt was also recognized for her stellar play this week, earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors.
The is the first espnW National Player of the Week honor for Brown and her first time earning Pac-12 Player of the Week Honors. Brown was previously named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week at the conclusion of the 2016-17 regular season. This also marks the first Pac-12 weekly honor for Lutje Schipholt, a 6'2" forward from the Netherlands. Lutje Schipholt averaged double-double off the bench as Cal extended its win streak to three in a row with wins over San Diego State and No. 20 Arkansas.
Brown opened the week with a then season-high 18 points in Cal's 74-48 victory at San Diego State, going 8-for-13 from the floor. The 6'1" senior matched her then career-best with nine rebounds and dished out a career-high five assists in just 27 minutes of action, helping the Golden Bears to their first road win of the year. Cal's leading scorer this season averaging 14.4 points per game, Brown is shooting 50 percent (9-18) from beyond the arc and is tied for the team lead in rebounding at 8.0 rebounds per game.
The versatile Brown took that momentum into Sunday's matchup against 20
th-ranked Arkansas, dominating on both ends of the floor as the Bears picked up their first Top-25 win of the season. Brown surpassed her season-high with 19 points at the half and had an eye-popping 15 points in the second quarter alone. The Murrieta, California-native went 6-for-10 from the floor and grabbed six of her 12 rebounds in the pivotal second quarter, as Cal erased a seven-point deficit early in the quarter to take an eight-point lead into the locker room. Brown's 15 points mark the most by any Cal player in a single quarter this season.
Â
Cal's lone returning starter from last season, Brown continued her barrage in the second half –going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the second half and grabbing six more offensive rebounds. Brown went 4-for-5 from three-point range on the afternoon – matching her career-best – and single-handedly outrebounded the entire Arkansas team on the offensive glass, finishing with a game-high 10 offensive rebounds, the most by any Pac-12 player in a game this season. Brown added two blocked shots on the day as she recorded her first collegiate double-double.
Brown is just the 23
rd player in program history to score 30 or more points in a game and joins All-Americans Ashley Walker, Reshanda Gray, and
Kristine Anigwe as the only Golden Bears in the last 20 seasons to post at least 30 points and 12 rebounds in a single game. Also named the National Player of the Year by
CollegeSportsMadness, Brown's outing against the 20
th-ranked Razorbacks marked just the fourth time in the last 20 years that a Cal player has posted 30+ points and 12+ rebounds against a Top-25 opponent.
One of four new faces on the Cal roster this season, Lutje Schipholt led all players with a game-high 11 rebounds in Cal's road victory over San Diego State - highlighted by seven offensive rebounds. She followed it up with her first collegiate double-double in Cal's upset win over No. 20 Arkansas, going off for 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds and a career-high four assists. An athletic and energetic presence in the post, Lutje Schipholt added a pair of blocks against the Razorbacks and ranks eighth in the Pac-12, averaging 1.4 blocks per game this season. The Dutch international – who led the Bears in scoring in her collegiate debut – is third on the team in rebounding at 6.8 rebounds per game and ranks fifth in scoring at 8.0 points per game.
