Haynes Ties Career-High In Sweep At Arizona

Senior Maddie Haynes Recorded 19 Kills On .484 hitting.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Senior Maddie Haynes tied a career-high with 19 kills and hit .484 in the match as No. 20 California swept its way to a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 victory over Arizona Thursday night in the McKale Center.

Haynes tallied all 19 kills in the final two frames as Cal improved to 19-4 overall and 9-4 in the Pac-12.

In a balanced offensive effort, senior Bailee Huizenga recorded 10 kills on .409 hitting and junior Mima Mirkovic added 10 kills on .476 efficiency. California out-hit Arizona .456-.308 in the match.

"I thought tonight's match was one of our better executed matches overall, we started playing Cal volleyball and ended playing Cal volleyball," Haynes said. "Mentally and physically we controlled all three sets and never let up. At the end of the day it matters who is going to perform better and that's exactly what we did as a team. We came out on top and we're going to carry this momentum into our next opponent."

The Bears hit over .400 in all three sets, tallying a .471 mark in the first frame, .457 in the second, and .441 in the third and final set to close out the win. Cal won the kill battle 54-41 and had 46 digs compared to 35 for the Wildcats.

California jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in the first behind three kills from Huizenga, and built a 20-12 advantage on another kill from the senior, forcing an Arizona timeout. The Wildcats closed to within 22-18, but the Bears finished it off on nine first set kills from Huizenga to take the opening frame.

The home team answered with an early 4-1 lead in the second, but Cal took its first lead of the set on a big swing and kill from Mirkovic. It was all Haynes from there as her 10th kill of the set gave the Bears a 21-19 lead, and 12th kill made it 24-21. Cal dominated the final frame, using an 8-0 run to go up 20-12 and close out the match.

"I thought our team was fairly solid tonight in a lot of facets of the game," Cal head coach Sam Crosson said. "Our serve receive against the short serves by UA was effective for us to run our offense. Our attackers were both committed and smart tonight, which helped us hit for a very high efficiency and I thought we scored well in the out of system swings we had. I'm proud of the group for their performance and we're looking forward to Sunday at ASU"
