Cal-UCLA Postgame Quotes
Chase Garbers threw for one score and ran for another at UCLA.

Cal-UCLA Postgame Quotes

Cal head coach Justin Wilcox
on the offensive line's performance
"Again, I think just as a whole to be able to move the ball and run it, I don't know what we ended up with, but yeah it was noticeable. So I think we continue to build on that. Those guys are competing like crazy, that's for sure, and it all starts there. When you can get things going running the football, it kind of opens things up throwing it. Having all that group back together and whether it's McKade [Mettauer] taking that next step or Jake Curhan and Mike Saffell settling things down, and all those guys and 'Val' [Valentino Daltoso]. I thought they just competed really hard."

on if this was one of center Michael Saffell's better performances
"That would be hard for me to say. I wouldn't doubt it. But it's hard for me to say just hearing you say that. I've got to watch the video. Mike is a steady performer. He really is. Mike is a good football player. He's a great leader, he's extremely tough and competitive, he chases the ball down the field. So it doesn't surprise me."

on slowing down UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson
"Doing a good job with leverage, not rushing past the quarterback. He's a really talented player. He can throw it, he can run it, make plays with his feet. Our rushers did a pretty nice job getting off some blocks and making some plays on him. He's a tough guy to get on the ground. I thought we could have done some things better in our coverage, but that'll give us something to work on, and you've got to give those guys credit, too. They have a really good scheme and good players doing it."

Cal quarterback Chase Garbers
on closing the regular season with a win at UCLA
"It means a lot to get that seventh win, and it's the first time this staff and we've beat UCLA, so overall to come down here and get the seventh win means a lot. It's great to have it."

on if revenge was on his teammates' minds after losing to UCLA last season
"I have to say no. They came in last year and beat us up pretty well. But, I think just where we are as a team, we've got to treat every opponent as they are every week. We were just so honed in on getting that seventh win."

UCLA head coach Chip Kelly
on the status of Dorian Thompson-Robinson
"Dorian got hurt and the trainers just told us that he's out. They didn't tell me the specific injury."

on his overall thoughts on the end of the season
"Obviously, we wanted to win this game for our seniors. We don't have many of them. But for the guys who played, and we'd talked about it all week long, really after the SC game, what they have done. Krys Barnes who couldn't go today, Lokeni [Toailoa], Josh Woods, KLS [Keisean Lucier-South], you know that group of guys on defense and then Boss [Tagaloa] who got knocked out early today and then Josh [Kelley] on offense and then our two kickers. It was important for us to go out and compete, and they competed really hard in practice this week. We were on the goal line at the end and couldn't punch it in. We wanted to give ourselves as a chance to get an onside kick and maybe make it a game. I thought they fought and battled, but we didn't do enough to win and you've got to give credit to Justin's team."

on giving up yards and taking a look at the team's defense
"You've got to look at everything that goes on. We'll always assess everything after the season, scheme and personnel and everything. We will look at everything and we're always trying to improve and try to make ourselves better. This isn't the time to talk about anything like that."

on the phrase "you are what your record says you are"
"I think this team is growing. I've watched how these guys have responded to everything that they have faced during the season. We knew going in, the challenges that we had, we were a young team and guys were going to have to get experience on the run. I watched our guys individually grow as a group, and I think that is part of what this process is all about. It's obviously not where we want it to be, but we've watched some improvement with these guys. There are some young guys here where we are really excited about what their future is."

on his level of commitment to the team
"My commitment level is the same since I've been here, it's been 100 percent. We go to work every day and give everything we have to this program."

on the growth of this team and how close they are
"I don't know what scale you're looking for, but I know that I've seen young players who played a lot of football for us this year and they grew. You're excited to come back, and we get a chance to get to spring ball and coach these guys up. I know that with how they progressed during the season, I'm excited about what the future is, to be honest with you."

on Dorian Thompson-Robinson
"I just love his competiveness. He's one of the tougher kids who I have had the opportunity to coach. He's going to battle. He's going to fight. He is a guy who learns from when mistakes are made. He usually doesn't make the same mistake twice. He continues to grow and get better. It was a heck of a play by [Ashtyn] Davis on a ball that was tipped. We'll get a chance to watch the film and see what happened there. Cal made a heck of a diving interception. It was a heck of a play on his part."

UCLA running back Joshua Kelley
on if he thinks he left UCLA in a better place than he found it
"That's a really emotional question for me. I do, definitely. My experience here has been absolutely amazing, I wouldn't take it back for anything. I've matured so much as a man, as a person. It's helped me as a man. I think it's gonna be special for the young men coming up the next few years. There's so many playmakers here. It's gonna be awesome to see. I think it's great that me and Josh [Woods] were a part of this and that we contributed to something special that's coming."

on hitting the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive season
"It feels pretty cool because there have been so many incredible running backs here – Coach Foster, Maurice Jones-Drew, just so many incredible backs here. I know I didn't win as much as those guys, and that's something I really wish I could do. I think it's pretty cool that someday I'll see my name listed with some of those guys. I think we left our mark here. It's kind of sad to think about because I've built so many strong relationships with everyone here and it's just tough because I definitely wanted to win the Pac-12 for you guys, for the fans. UCLA fans have been so amazing over these past years watching us grow. I think it's going to be special years to come. Individual-wise, I think it's humbling. It shows that anyone can come in here and do it, whether you're a walk-on or a scholarship guy."

UCLA linebacker Josh Woods
on playing his final game at UCLA
"I think it's deeper when the young guys come up to you after the game and tell you how much of an impact you've had in their lives and their development. I'm just grateful to be a part of this program, build so many special bonds with guys like Josh [Kelley]. It's bittersweet."

on his takeaways from being a Bruin
"It's being a good person and a good leader. I always try to inspire others and just be positive as a leader even when I was hurt – just showing guys that adversity is going to hit, and it's just how you react to it. You keep going even if you fall and you build from it."
