Cal Continues Homestand With Saturday Doubleheader Against Santa Clara
BERKELEY – There's no place like home! Unbeaten in its last seven games in Berkeley, the Cal women's basketball team looks to continue its winning ways on Saturday, hosting Santa Clara at 4:30 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion. The matchup between the Golden Bears (6-2, 0-0 Pac-12) and the Broncos (4-4, 0-0 WCC) is the first game in a doubleheader with the Cal men's basketball team, who host Saint Mary's at 7:30 p.m. PT. Both games will be broadcast on Pac-12 Networks.
After dropping their first two games of the season, the Bears have rattled off six consecutive wins, with those six victories coming by an average margin of victory of 18 points. The Bears beat Boston University, 73-62, their last time out, led by four different players scoring in double-figures. Junior forward Alaysia Styles recorded her first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while senior Jaelyn Borwn also added 11 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists. Senior center CJ West continued her strong play down low with 10 points and nine rebounds while freshman Jazlen Green scored in double-figures for the third consecutive game, posting 10 points on a 3-of-6 effort from beyond the arc.
Offensive balance has been a key for the Bears this season, with new faces and expanded roles across the roster. Brown, a senior guard and the lone returning starter from last season, leads the Bears and ranks 12th in the Pac-12 in scoring at 13.9 points per game this season. Styles, a San Diego native, is second on the team in scoring at 11.0 points per game and has scored in double-figures in her last three outings, the longest such streak of her collegiate career. Redshirt senior Sara Anastasieska is averaging 10.4 points per game on the year after missing the majority of the previous two seasons due to injury. Anastasieska has knocked down a team-high 13 three-pointers this season, helping Cal rank third in the conference with a 37.4 percent three-point field goal percentage on the year.
Defensively, the Bears rank second in the Pac-12 in three-point percentage defense and have held opponents to fewer than 60 points three times this season. The Bears also rank among the Pac-12 leaders in rebounding, averaging 43.4 rebounds per game on the year. Cal has rebounded its opponent in all six victories this season.

Santa Clara heads to Berkeley looking to snap a two-game losing streak. After falling to Delaware, 81-80, in overtime in the championship game of the Titan Classic, the Broncos fell to Long Beach State, 54-46, their last time out. Beach used a big third quarter and capitalized on 26 turnovers to hand Santa Clara its first home loss of the season. Ashlyn Herlihy led the Broncos with 15 points, while Lauren Yearwood chipped in 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. Lindsey VanAllen added a career-high 10 rebounds in the loss.
Senior guard Tia Hay leads Santa Clara in scoring this season at 12.8 points per game and was named to the 2019-20 All-WCC Preseason Team. Hay, a Second Team All-WCC Selection in 2018-19, also leads the Broncos with 3.9 assists per game, but was held scoreless in last weeks' loss to Long Beach.
Herlihy, a 6'1" redshirt junior, is also averaging double-figures this season at 11.6 points per game, and leads the Broncos on the boards with 7.0 rebounds per game. Herlihy and Hay are two of five starters returning from last season's squad, which went 14-17 overall and finished seventh in the WCC.
Saturday's game will be the 35th meeting all-time between the Bears and the Broncos, and their third in the last four seasons. Cal leads the overall series with its South Bay rival, 27-7, and has won three straight in the series. The most recent meeting between the teams resulted in a 79-41 victory for the Bears on December 2, 2017 at the Leavey Center, led by 17 points from Kristine Anigwe and an 11-point effort from then-sophomore Jaelyn Brown.
Santa Clara is led by head coach Bill Carr, who is in his fourth season with the Broncos. A member of Cal's Class of 2005, former Golden Bear standout Kristin Iwanaga '05 is in her fourth season as an assistant coach for the Broncos. A four-year starter for the Golden Bears, Iwanaga was a three-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection and still ranks first in program history in career free throw percentage, shooting 89 percent (235-264) from the line.
