BERKELEY – Cal wrapped up its 2019 training camp Saturday at California Memorial Stadium with its 20th practice since reporting August 1. The Golden Bears will be off Sunday before continuing preparation Monday for their season-opener against UC Davis in Berkeley on Saturday, August 31 (3:30 pm PT, Pac-12 Networks).

A celebration broke out after the final workout of camp when three now former walk-ons – Ben Hawk Schrider, Jake Tonges and Ricky Walker III – learned that they had earned athletic scholarships.

"There was some good news for some guys," Wilcox good-naturedly told reporters who had witnessed the celebration while coyly avoiding confirming the news. "I don't want to steal their thunder. That's between me and them, and I'll let them share. You'll probably get it on social media."

"Sometimes I feel like it becomes this show of 'look what we did for them,'" Wilcox continued when asked about his approach to talking about players earning scholarships. "That's not the case. They've earned it. They've done it. I didn't give them anything. Nobody at the university gave them anything. They've earned it."

The Golden Bears also issued their first depth chart of the 2019 campaign on Saturday.

"The big reveal," Wilcox said with a smile when asked by reporters about the depth chart.

Starting quarterback Chase Garbers was the first person Wilcox was asked about.

"He's earned it," Wilcox said. "This is not by default at all. It's been very competitive. Chase has had a really good off-season. I'm really proud of the way he's handled himself and worked on and off the field. I'm excited for him. I think he's just going to continue to get better and better."

"It's a total honor and a blessing to be recognized by the coaching staff and the players that I'll be out there game one leading the offense," Garbers said.

Wilcox also emphasized that the depth chart is still a fluid document and pointed out the wide receiver position as one place where that is perhaps most true.

"I understand the depth chart and the starting lineup is always a big, big topic," Wilcox said. "But depending upon the group we start the game – whether it's three-wide, maybe it's '12' personnel – those things are pretty fluid especially at that position. There will be a number of guys that play in the game next weekend."

Garbers also talked about the depth of the team's wide receivers as a group and fellow Orange County native Nikko Remigio individually.

"I love how deep our wideouts are," he said. "They're very talented. We showed a lot of hard work this fall camp. You saw it today. They were making plays."

"Nikko has worked his tail off," Garbers added about Remigio. "I think he's always had that dog mentality in him where he's going to be the best [player] out on the field. I love that kid. The connection we've built on the field is pretty strong."
