BERKELEY – California women's gymnastics scored season-high team totals overall and on vault and beam, but the effort wasn't enough to push the No. 12 Golden Bears past No. 3 Utah, 197.550-197.325.

Both teams were tied at 147.925 heading into the final rotation, but it was the Utes who came away with the win after scoring a season-high on their best event, the balance beam.

Still, Cal matched its season-high team total with its 197.325 – a mark the Bears set in their first outing at home against Stanford. Cal also tallied season-high team scores on vault (49.200) and beam (49.350), and added a 49.400 on floor, their second-highest total of the season.

"It was super exciting meet. I loved seeing the way our team continues to rise to the occasion, especially competing against a top-five program in Utah. When they know they need to be at their best, they rise to the occasion," said co-head coach Justin Howell. "We were really going head-to-head, back and forth, routine for routine -- and that's the way it should be. It really came down to the last routine."

Kyana George picked up another win in the all-around after logging career-highs on bars and beam, and reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week Nevaeh DeSouza was spectacular again with career-high totals on three of her four events to go 39.475 as an all-arounder. Maya Bordas rounded out the top three with a career-best 39.450 in the all-around.

"I was really pleased with the way our all-arounders performed this afternoon. Nevaeh continues to kill it in the all-around," Howell added. "Maya has been sick all week, she didn't practice on Friday, and we told her she needed to rest. She came in here and was like, 'Don't worry guys. I got this.'…I love to hear that from our athletes."

George also won floor with a 9.925 for her fourth floor crown of the season.

A pair of career-high vaults helped the Bears to their best total on the event all season, a 49.200. All six gymnasts in the lineup hit their vaults, with five going 9.825 or better, led by DeSouza's career-best 9.875 for her Yurchenko 1.5. Talitha Jones was one of three Bears with a 9.825, which matched her personal best and upped her season-high from 9.725.

"I was pleased with better vaulting from us this afternoon. We still need to work on our landings a little bit.  When you're talking about losing a meet by a couple of tenths, you're talking about a landing here and there." Howell said. "When we can keep doing big gymnastics moves, and control those landings, you'll see us come up in our overall team score."

A big first rotation on bars by the Red Rocks had Utah leading 49.425-49.200.

DeSouza got the Bears on bars rolling early, scoring her second career-high of the day with a 9.90 on the event for the second consecutive week. George followed with a career-high 9.90 of her own for the second of the day. Jones continued her strong start by matching a season-best 9.825, and Maya Green made her Cal debut with a 9.85. An uncharacteristic mistake on her toe blind left bars staple Emi Watterson with a 9.125, forcing anchor Bordas to hit in order for the Bears to salvage their rotation.

Bordas did more than just hit, earning the lineup's third 9.90 of the day to push Cal to 49.375. During the second rotation, Utah turned in a solid vault set for a 49.075, giving the Bears a 98.575-98.500 edge over the Utes through two rotations.

A brilliant beam rotation saw the Bears draw a season-high 49.350 on the event, which also matched the program's fourth-highest score on the event all-time. Jones led off with her third consecutive 9.825 of the day, matching her personal best, while Clausi and George scored their own set of career-high 9.90s. DeSouza added a 9.85, and Bordas earned a 9.875.

Despite a fall in Utah's floor rotation, the Red Rocks' 49.425 was enough to close the gap. After three rotations, Cal and Utah were tied at 147.925.

With the scores deadlocked entering the final rotation, Cal would need to put up a strong floor showing to upset the Utes. The Bears started strong, with another career-high by DeSouza with her 9.85. George built on the start with a 9.925, and Bordas added a 9.90. In her lone event, Grace Quinn matched a career-best 9.85 before an uncharacteristic step out-of-bounds by Milan Clausi in the fifth spot. Once again, Cal needed a hit to stay in contention, and Rachael Mastrangelo delivered with a career-best 9.875 performance. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to combat a Utah beam rotation that saw the Utes of 49.625 with a trio of 9.95s.

Cal takes on Bay Area rival Stanford for the fourth time this season next Sunday, Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. from Maples Pavilion. The meet airs live on Pac-12 Networks.
