Cal Alum Christian Dyer Makes National Team Appearance
Dyer Scores Try Against the French Barbarians In USA Rugby Summer Series
HOUSTON – California rugby alumnus Christian Dyer is the latest former Golden Bear to make an appearance for the USA Eagles. He competed for the men's national team in the 15-a-side match versus the French Barbarians on Friday, July 1.
The Cal All-American and national collegiate champion played in the No. 14 jersey this Friday. Dyer played all 80-minutes of the match, his performance headlined by his try in the 28th minute. The Eagles claimed victory over the French Barbarians in a gritty match, finishing the 2022 opener with a final score of 26-21.
Dyer was a standout during his time in the Blue & Gold. Although he faced an injury that sidelined him in his final season at Cal in 2020, in 2019 he logged an impressive 10 starts and 14 tries, including one in the national championship quarterfinals match against Arizona.
Since leaving Cal, Dyer has been capped six times for his performance in full international competition as a USA Eagle. In his international debut in July 2021, Dyer scored a late try in the match versus England at the historic Twickenham Stadium. Dyer is also currently signed to Major League Rugby team, the Houston SaberCats.
The national team is set to play next in the Rugby World Cup Qualifier. Dyer and fellow former Bear Jack Iscaro ('19), who was called up to train with the Eagles this past week, will both vie for a spot on the 23-man roster and a chance to be capped in full international competition. The Eagles face Chile on July 9 in Santiago, Chile. Fans can watch the match live at 6pm ET on FloRugby.
