Cal Scores Second-Highest Pommel Horse Total In Modern Program History
BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics returned to Haas Pavilion for the first time in nearly two months on Saturday afternoon and delivered an outstanding performance to the home crowd, topping both Army (390.150) and William & Mary (384.200) with a season-high score of 399.350.
After an impressive outing on floor, in which two Golden Bears posted outright personal bests (junior
David Rauchwerger, 13.500; freshman
Harrison Gregory, 13.800) and two others tied their personal records (sophomore
Tyler Shimizu, 13.850; junior
Noah Newfeld, event-winning 14.000), Cal carried over its pommel horse momentum from last weekend to record the second-best total (67.550) in modern program history. Junior
Aidan Li led the way for the Bears (and led the entire field) with his program No. 6 14.050, followed by senior
Noah Sano's No. 7 13.950.
"We always hype ourselves up about (pommel) horse," Newfeld said afterwards, "because we have some of the best in the nation. We're just pushing the numbers and really attacking the assignments, and I think that has really showed over the past couple of weeks."
The Bears continued the night on still rings, another event in which Newfeld won with his score of 13.900, then vault, where sophomore
Jasper Smith-Gordon came just short of his school record with a winning routine worth 14.800 points. Newfeld took home his third title of the afternoon on the next event – a 14.300 parallel bars score that ranks sixth in program history – while freshman
Theodor Gadderud closed out the meet by leading the squad on horizontal bar with his 13.000.
In total, the Bears won four out of six events as a team, taking the floor (68.750), pommel, rings (64.600) and parallel bars (66.450) crowns.
Cal appears at Haas Pavilion for the final time this season next Saturday as it honors four graduating seniors in Lavanakul,
Yu-Chen Lee,
Aidan Giusti and
Darren Wong. The Senior Day ceremony is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.
