Bears Close Out Home Slate
Cal Honored Four Seniors Prior To Meet
BERKELEY – California men's gymnastics welcomed Oklahoma to Haas Pavilion on Saturday for the Golden Bears' final home meet of the season, looking to post some solid routines in a head-to-head dual contest with the nation's No. 1 team. Ultimately, the visitors were in usual fine form as Cal scored 381.450 to the Sooners' 410.050.
Junior
Noah Newfeld led the Bears in three of six events, posting squad bests on floor (13.900), rings (13.500) and high bar (12.900). Senior
Will Lavanakul's 13.350 paced Cal on pommel horse, while freshman
Theodor Gadderud matched his personal best on vault with a score of 14.350 and junior
Chris Scales earned a 13.200 on parallel bars. Junior
Jelani Sweet also recorded a personal best on floor with his score of 13.600.
Sophomore
Tyler Shimizu competed in the all-around for the first time in his collegiate career, totaling 74.950 through six events.
Before the meet, four seniors –
Darren Wong,
Yu-Chen Lee,
Will Lavanakul and
Aidan Giusti – were honored for their contributions to the program. Each was presented with a wooden bear statue, a framed jersey and flowers to recognize their accomplishments as valued members of the team. Between them, the quartet claims two school records, nine additional program top 10 scores, four MPSF weekly awards and two CGA weekly awards, as well as eight CGA Scholar-Athlete, seven MPSF All-Academic and five Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll titles.
Cal will take two weeks to rest and train before heading back to Air Force Academy for the MPSF Championships on April 1. The first rotation is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
