BERKELEY – Riley Drullinger saved the Cal lacrosse team's dramatic 14-13 victory over Oregon on Friday when she turned back a free position shot by Katie Collins with four seconds remaining. Drullinger finished with 18 saves on 41 shots by the Ducks to surpass her career high of 14 that she had recorded on four previous occasions. Drullinger's final save set off a joyous on-field celebration as the Golden Bears' bench cleared and huddled around Drullinger to enjoy the win.
Drullinger was just one member of Cal's 2023 senior class to have a big day. The offense was led by fellow seniors
Quinnlyn Mason and
Amanda Morse with the fifth-year senior Mason scoring a career-high five goals and Morse picking up a career-high six points on four goals and two assists.
"Our senior class had an amazing day," first-year head coach
Jennifer Wong said. "Riley, Quinn and Amanda put up big numbers, but each one of the seniors had great performances. This class has been leading the way the entire year, and it's so rewarding to see it come together. They wanted to win so badly, and they put the team on their back to get this victory. There is nothing better than getting to watch this senior class and team celebrate together."
Maya Lawliss, another member of the senior class, added a pair goals for the Bears, while also collecting the ground ball after Drullinger's final save.
Josie Lillquist and
Kate Rothman each had one goal and two assists, and
Mya Wang had one goal and one assist.
Cal (5-10, 2-6 Pac-12) swept the regular-season series from Oregon (5-9, 1-7 Pac-12) for the first time as members of the Pac-12 and paired with an April 15 non-conference win at UC Davis in their previous game, has now won back-to-back contests for the first time since 2020. Cal will be looking to make it three in a row for the first time since the 2019 squad won four straight from February 22 – March 8 when the Bears host Colorado (7-7, 5-3 Pac-12) on Sunday at California Memorial Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 1 pm PDT.
Cal will also welcome Stanford (8-7, 6-2 Pac-12) for Senior Day in its April 28 regular-season finale before hosting the six-team Pac-12 Championship for the first time May 3-6. The win over Oregon moves the Bears one game ahead of the Ducks for the fifth seed in the event with Cal also owning the tiebreaker between the teams due to their two-game regular-season series sweep of the Ducks.
"Winning Pac-12 games is amazing and this one is even more special because of its' impact on the seedings for the Pac-12 Championship," said Wong, who has led the Bears to their most wins since the 2019 squad finished 7-12.
Mason and Morse also talked about the importance of Friday's victory, in addition to offering their thoughts on the performances of Drullinger and the Bears' offense.
"Winning today's game was really important because it will give us a higher seed for our conference tournament," Mason said. "Riley had a great day today. She showed up and showed out, coming up with huge saves throughout the game with the last one the cherry on top. Our offensive play today also really came together, and my goals were a result of the growing chemistry we have on attack."
"We all had each other's backs out there and worked together all four quarters," Morse added. "Our offense was able to adjust when it was necessary, and we played as a cohesive unit to get the job done. Riley really stepped up to the plate and her saves throughout the entirety of the game secured this win for us, which was truly the key to our success. Overall, it was a fantastic team effort, and we're looking forward to Colorado on Sunday."
