Cal’s Regular-Season Ends With 18-8 Loss To Stanford

Golden Bears Host Arizona State Wednesday To Open Pac-12 Championship

BERKELEY – The California lacrosse team ended its regular-season Friday with an 18-8 loss to Stanford on Senior Day at California Memorial Stadium. Cal's nine Cal seniors – Brooke Baker, Siena Davies, Olivia Dey, Riley Drullinger, Maya Lawliss, Quinnlyn Mason, Kelly McIntyre, Amanda Morse and Kacie Riggs – were honored in a pre-game ceremony, while Stanford's eight seniors were also recognized.

"Our nine seniors have done so much for this program during their careers," first-year head coach Jennifer Wong said. "I feel incredibly lucky to have had this season with them. Today was a wonderful day to celebrate them with their families."

Cal started strong with two seniors – Lawliss and Morse – scoring early goals in the opening period to give the Bears a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest, with Lawliss also assisting on Morse's goal.Stanford answered with a pair of goals by Katy Gilbert and Jay Browne on assists from Caroline Mondiello and Ashley Humphrey to tie the score at 2-2, but Cal came right back when Mya Wang scored on assist by Kate Rothman to retake a 3-2 lead. Cal would hold its one-goal advantage for nearly eight minutes before Stanford's Annabel Frist broke the scoring drought with 40 seconds remaining in the opening period on an assist by Humphrey to tie the game at 3-3.

The Bears were the first to score in the second period when Lawliss found the back of the cage at the 13:23 mark on an assist by Kennedy Mason but the Cardinal would score the next seven goals to surge to a 10-4 lead before Mason finally broke the Bears' scoring drought over 17 minutes after Lawliss' goal with an unassisted tally at the 11:01 mark of the third. But Stanford erased much doubt about the game's final outcome by scoring four more unanswered goals before Morse got the final tally of the third unassisted.

Stanford increased its lead to 18-7 by scoring four of the first five goals of the final period before Morse ended the game's scoring on her unassisted goal with 0:47 remaining.

Morse picked up her hat trick on just four shots to lead the Cal offense, while Humphrey finished with a game-high seven points with her four goals and three assists also both the most in the contest for the Cardinal.

Kennedy Goss added four draw controls to increase her total to 78 on the season. Goss is three shy of Cal's all-time single-season record of 81 and two short of her own career-high of 80 in 2022.

Riley Drullinger played the entire game in goal for the Bears and registered a career-high 19 saves while facing 50 Stanford shots including 37 on goal. Kara Rahaim registered seven saves and picked up the win in the cage for the Cardinal.

The bracket for the 2023 Pac-12 Championship hosted by Cal for the first time next week was released after Friday's end of the regular season.

Cal (5-12, 2-8 Pac-12) will be the fifth seed and host fourth-seeded Arizona State (5-12, 3-7 Pac-12) in the first of two Wednesday quarterfinals with the second featuring third-seeded Colorado (9-7, 7-3 Pac-12) against sixth-seeded Oregon (5-11, 1-9 Pac-12). The Cal/Arizona State winner will take on the Pac-12's regular-season champion and top-seeded USC (14-3, 9-1 Pac-12) in the first of two Thursday semifinals, while the Colorado/Oregon winner will take on second-seeded Stanford (10-7, 8-2 Pac-12) in the nightcap. The quarterfinals and semifinals both begin at 4:30 and 7 p.m., while Saturday's title game starts at noon.

"Over the past few weeks our team has grown exponentially," Wong said. "We are looking to build on our recent successes and take them into the Pac-12 Tournament. Playing at California Memorial Stadium will be a wonderful home field advantage and we are excited for Wednesday."
