In the third varsity eight race, the Bears stayed with the top three boats early and were just one seat behind Stanford through the halfway mark. It was a race between the Bears and Cardinal as there was open water behind them and the rest of the field. Â
In the non-scoring freshmen eight race, Cal got off to a good start staying with the leading pack and was just two seconds behind Washington in the opening 500 meters. The Bears fell four seats behind the Huskies through 1,500 and were even with Stanford. Cal made a strong push in the sprint to overtake Washington but fell behind Stanford for second place with a time of 06:41.157.
Â
"The team finished second or third in every event," Cal head coach
Al Acosta said. "Obviously it would have been nice to finish better than where we were seeded, but we just didn't make it happen today. We're proud of the energy that the team brought today and they did a good job in a lot of the racing, but we need to take another step forward in the next two weeks. Good thing is that we're done with classes and we've got the time and more importantly the attitude to make sure we get it right before NCAAs."
Â
Cal will now await the announcement of the NCAA field during the selection show which will air Tuesday at 3:30 PM PT on NCAA.com.
