SAN JOSE – The Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships kicked off competition on Thursday morning at the SAP Center, but California's Tyler Shimizu waited nearly six hours to start his first rotation as he and the senior men's field began to show their skills in front of the men's gymnastics fans at the Xfinity U.S. Gymnastics Championships. At the end of the night, he had recorded scores on floor, pommel horse and parallel bars; he will look to improve upon those scores in two days' time when Saturday's contest begins at 4:00 p.m. PT.

Shimizu started the night on horse in his U.S. Championships debut, recording a score of 11.250 before heading to the parallel bars, where he recorded a 13.050 for his best result of the evening. His final routine on floor scored 12.850.

Stanford's Asher Hong currently sits in first place in the all-around with a single-day score of 85.615, followed by Olympian Yul Moldauer (85.548) and Michigan's Fred Richard (85.469).
