BERKELEY – The California women's basketball team used a dominant performance on the glass to take down Oregon, 66-57, at Haas Pavilion Sunday afternoon.
The Golden Bears (13-6, 3-4 Pac-12) brought down 22 offensive rebounds, which led to 24 second-chance points. The Bears have now pulled down 20+ offensive rebounds in five games this season – the most of any Pac-12 team. The win also snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Ducks (11-9, 2-5).
Ioanna Krimili had her second consecutive game with at least 20 points and five 3-pointers, scoring a game- and season-high 24 points. Marta Suárez posted her sixth double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds while
McKayla Williams grabbed 10 rebounds. Suárez and Williams combined for eight offensive rebounds.
Leilani McIntosh continued her ascent in Cal's record book, moving into fourth place on the all-time assists list (487) by passing Asha Thomas, and seventh on the all-time steals list (206) by passing Laura Baker.
Cal hoisted a program-record 39 3-point attempts.
Cal missed its first five field goals in the first quarter but was able to convert at the free-throw line, hitting all four attempts. Kemery Martín hit a 3-pointer at the 4:40 mark for the Bears' first field goal of the quarter. She hit another triple to get the Bears to within three points with under a minute to go in the quarter, but the Ducks answered with one of their own to take a 18-12 lead going into the second quarter.
Martín hit her third 3-pointer and Krimili followed up with one of her own to tie the game at 18-18 at the 8:39 mark in the second quarter. A jumper by Williams cut the Ducks' lead to two midway through the period. Krimili hit her fourth 3-pointer to tie the game, 31-31, with less than a minute to go in the quarter but the Ducks hit a pair of free throws to take a 33-31 lead into halftime. The Bears were able to crash the glass in the first half with 16 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second-chance points.
In the third quarter, Krimili got a steal and a layup to tie the game 37-37 with six minutes to go. Oregon then went on a 7-0 run before Michelle Onyiah ended it with a layup at the 3:24 mark. Krimili hit her fifth 3-pointer and Suárez followed with a layup to give the Bears their first lead of the game with 1:13 to go in the quarter. Oregon scored a layup on its last possession to take a one-point lead into the fourth.
McIntosh stole an inbounds pass and passed it to Suárez for a layup to re-take the lead for the Bears at the 8:18 mark in the fourth quarter. McIntosh then hit a 3-pointer on Cal's next possession to take a four-point lead, which it wouldn't give up for the rest of the game. Oregon got to within two points with 3:34 remaining in the game, but went scoreless the rest of the way to seal the win for Cal.
Oregon was led by Phillipina Kyei's 17 points and 14 rebounds.
