BERKELEY – The No. 10 California women's soccer team suffered its first shutout and conference loss of the season Thursday night falling to No. 1 North Carolina 1-0. Sophomore goalkeeper
Teagan Wy had a career-high nine saves for Cal.
The Golden Bears' (10-2-2, 3-1-1) defense survived an onslaught of Tar Heel attacks for just over 89 minutes until a UNC forward was taken down near the top of the 18-yard box. The call on the field was that the foul occurred outside of the box, but after a replay review the Tar Heels (13-1, 6-0) were granted a penalty kick.
UNC's Bella Sember stepped to the spot for the try and fired a low shot to the left side of the goal. Wy made a heroic, diving save to collect her ninth of the afternoon, but Sember quickly found the rebound and deposited the match's only goal with just 55 seconds remaining. Wy made a second effort and managed to dive back the other way, but the ball rolled just under her.
The Tar Heels won the shot battle 17-5 and placed 11 on frame to the Bears' five. The loss ended Cal's 11-match unbeaten streak
The Bears are back at Edwards Stadium this Sunday to take on No. 3 Duke Blue Devils for the Make-A-Wish Dedication Game. The match will feature special food options, raffle items, and a post-match autograph session. A portion of the proceeds will go to the foundation.
