Freshman Jonathan Irwanto notched a straight-set victory during Cal's second match against UC Davis on Saturday.
BERKELEY -Â
Timofey Stepanov and
Alex Chang each won a pair of singles matches to lead the California men's tennis team to a doubleheader sweep of UC Davis on Saturday at Hellman Tennis Complex. Stepanov clinched the 5-2 victory in the second dual match, while
John Kim clinched the 5-0 win over the Aggies in the opening match.
Â
The Golden Bears improved to 14-0 in the all-time series with the Aggies, while their season record improved to 2-3. UC Davis is also 2-3.
The matches were part of a restructured weekend schedule that saw the Bears cancel their Sunday matches against the Aggies and UC Santa Barbara due to impending inclement weather.
Chang won both of his matches Saturday in straight sets. His 6-1, 6-2 win over the Aggies' Brett Brinkman in the first match helped the Bears finish that contest in less than two hours, with Kim posting a 6-4, 6-2 result over Lucas Bollinger to secure the win in the opener. Cal senior
Ryder Jackson completed his 6-1, 6-2 win over Constantinos Djakouris at almost the same time that Kim beat Bollinger, making the final score 5-0.
Stepanov needed three sets to register his second win – a 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 result over Brinkman that decided Cal's second triumph by giving the Bears a 4-2 lead. Cal freshman
Ethan Schiffman bested Sam De Vries 6-0, 6-7, 6-3, to complete the 5-2 score.
The Bears return to the courts Feb. 11 against Pepperdine in Berkeley.
