Noah Newfeld Named Finalist For Nissen-Emery Award
Trophy Presented Each Year To Top Senior Collegiate Gymnast
California men's gymnastics senior
Noah Newfeld has been named by the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) as a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award. Established in 1966 as the Nissen Award, the Nissen-Emery Award is presented each year to the most outstanding senior collegiate gymnast in the United States, taking into consideration not only gymnastics prowess but also academic success and leadership. Newfeld is the first Golden Bear finalist since Kevin Wolting in 2016.
Since arriving at campus in the fall of 2020, Newfeld has been one of Cal's most accomplished gymnasts both in and out of competition. He was the first athlete in program history to win CGA Rookie of the Year honors, following a 2021 campaign in which he was named Rookie of the Week four times and reached the NCAA Finals on horizontal bar. The next year, he qualified for the first of three consecutive USA Gymnastics Winter Cups as well as that year's U.S. Championships, also reaching the NCAA Finals in both 2022 and 2023. Newfeld is a three-time recipient of the team's Most Valuable Gymnast award and was also presented with Cal's Keeney-Frey Award last season, which recognizes excellence in both gymnastics and leadership. He currently ranks third on Cal's modern program rings list, fourth on pommel horse and fifth on parallel bars.
Newfeld is a three-time CGA All-America Scholar Athlete, a three-time Pac-12 Academic Honor Roll member and a two-time MPSF All-Academic. He has been a member of Cal's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) throughout his entire college career, serving as co-chair of the Mental Health and Wellness Subcommittee for one year, and is both co-founder and director of external communications of Cal Athletes in Tech. Newfeld is heavily involved in volunteer work, playing with children during recess at Sylvia Mendez Elementary; helping to build a new playground with the Eat, Play, Learn and KABOOM organizations in Oaklhand; and assisting with Cal's annual School Haas Rock event. He will graduate this spring with a degree in electrical engineering and computer science.
Should he be selected, Newfeld would be the first Bear in history to win the Nissen-Emery Award. The finalists will all be recognized prior to the NCAA Championships in April, with the winner set to be announced at the pre-championships banquet.
