Bears Look To Qualify For Olympics
Several Current, Former Men’s Rowers Set For Final Olympics Qualification Regatta
Seven current and former members of the California men's rowing team will look to punch their ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympic Games when they compete at the 2024 World Rowing Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, May 19-21. This marks the last chance rowers will have to qualify for the Olympics. A total of 183 crews will be competing for 30 remaining spots. In order to qualify a boat will have to finish in the top two of its event.
Three of the rowers are current members of the team that took this year off to train for the Paris Games. Frederick Breuer will row for Germany in the men's four,
Gennaro di Mauro will be in the men's eight for Italy and
Tim Roth will compete in the men's four for Switzerland. The trio were part of Cal's varsity eight that won back-to-back IRA National Championships the last two years.
Making up the group of former Golden Bears competing are Jack Cleary '18 in the men's quadruple sculls for Australia, Nikki Van Sprang '16 in the men's pair for the Netherlands, Joachim Sutton '19 in the men's pair for Denmark and
Christian Tabash '23 in the men's eight for the U.S.
Breuer, di Mauro and Roth last competed at the World Rowing Cup I in Varese, Italy, in March. Breuer rowed in the men's four that finished fourth – less than one second from third. He rowed for Germany in the men's pair at the 2023 U23 World Championships and finished first in the B final.
Di Mauro won the C Final in the men's single sculls, just missing the cut for the A/B Final by less than a second at the World Rowing Cup I. Prior to that, he rowed in the Italian men's eight at the 2023 World Rowing Cup II, where he finished first in the B final.
Roth finished in fifth place in the A final of the men's four at the World Rowing Cup I. Before that, he rowed in the single sculls for Switzerland at the World Rowing Cup II, where he finished second in the B final.

Prior to that he represented Australia at the 2023 World Rowing Cup III in the men's double sculls and the 2023 World Rowing Cup II, where he finished fourth in the men's double sculls.
Van Sprang finished fourth in the men's four at the 2023 World Championships, helping the Netherlands qualify its boat for the Paris Olympics. That same summer, he finished with a silver medal in the men's four at the European Championships and a bronze medal in the men's eight at the World Rowing Cup III.
Sutton also recently competed at the World Rowing Cup I, where he earned a bronze medal in the men's pair. Prior to that he finished with a bronze medal in the men's pair at the 2023 World Rowing Cup I and a sixth-place finish in the B final in the men's pair at the 2023 World Rowing Championships.
Tabash was a grad transfer for the Bears during the 2023 season when he rowed in the third varsity for a majority of the season. His last international competition came at the 2021 U23 World Rowing Championships where he earned a bronze medal in the men's coxed four.
