Christian Tucker Transfers To Cal
Former UTSA Guard Had One Of Nation’s Best Assist Rates Last Season
BERKELEY – Christian Tucker has signed to play for the California men's basketball program, head coach
Mark Madsen announced Friday. Tucker spent the previous three years at Texas-San Antonio and will join the Golden Bears for the upcoming 2024-25 season with one year of eligibility remaining.
Â
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard had one of the country's best assist rates as a junior last season, ranking 34th nationally and second in the American Athletic Conference with 5.4 assists per game while posting a 2.62 assist-to-turnover ratio (42nd nationally). Tucker's breakout 2023-24 campaign also saw him average 11.3 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 steals while starting all 32 games for the Roadrunners.
Â
"Christian is an exciting guard who plays the game the right way," Madsen said. "He attacks the rim with aggression and always seems to maintain great vision to make every one of his teammates better. Christian's court awareness and poise with the ball in his hands will elevate our offense immediately – he owned one of the nation's best assist rates last season and we believe he'll only get better. It'll be great to have Christian as a Golden Bear."
Â
Tucker tallied three double-doubles last season – all of the points-assists variation – including a 12-point, 14-assist effort against Tulsa in which he matched the UTSA and AAC single-game assist record. An improved scorer within his increased role for the Roadrunners as a junior, Tucker scored in double figures 21 times while shooting 41% (102-of-249) from the floor and an AAC-leading 87.5% (126-of-144) clip at the free-throw line.
Â
Tucker primarily came off the bench in each of his first two seasons in San Antonio, making 12 starts across 55 games played. He has averaged 6.7 PPG, 2.1 RPG and 2.8 APG, and has 61 steals – 36 of which were swiped last year – in his career.
Â
Tucker, who was born in Los Angeles, graduated from Gilbert Perry High School in Chandler, Arizona, in 2021.
