Cal's Olympic Contingent Continues To Grow
Murphy Qualifies For Second Event; Jones Joins Him In 200 Back
INDIANAPOLIS – The contingent of California swimmers headed to Paris for the 2024 Summer Olympics continued to climb Thursday, as rising sophomore
Keaton Jones joined decorated alumnus
Ryan Murphy as Team USA's representatives in Paris in the 200-meter backstroke.
The Golden Bears now have four confirmed Olympians from the U.S. trials, with three days remaining. Counting international swimmers, Cal currently has 11 swimmers headed to Paris.
Murphy, who earlier this week also qualified in the 100 backstroke, won the 200 back finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials in a time of 1:54.22. Jones took second with a mark of 1:54.61.
The top two finishers in each event at the Olympic Trials earn a spot in Paris.
Murphy, a six-time Olympic medalist who has medaled in both backstroke events in each of the past two Summer Games, becomes the first U.S. swimmer in history to qualify for both backstroke events in three different Olympics. He won the gold medal in both events in 2016.
Jones, an All-American last season as a freshman in the 200 back, joins a long list of Cal backstrokers to become Olympians. In each of the last two Olympics, Murphy was joined by a Cal teammate in the 200 back – Bryce Mefford in 2001 and Jacob Pebley in 2016.
