Right-Handed Pitcher Becomes Fourth Golden Bear Taken In 2024 Draft

California junior Andres Galan became the fourth Cal player and second Golden Bear right-handed pitcher to be selected in the 2024 Major League Baseball Draft when he was taken in the 17th round Tuesday by the Tampa Bay Rays with the 516th pick overall.

"Andres played a key role for us the last two seasons working primarily as a mid-week starter," Cal head coach Mike Neu said. "He really showed what he is capable of in the opening game of the Pac-12 Tournament last year when he shut down Washington. He's big and strong, and he can be dominating and a very tough guy to hit."

"Being drafted has been a lifelong dream," Galan said. "It's something I've envisioned since I was a young kid. I give all thanks and glory to God."

Catcher Caleb Lomavita was the first Cal player taken in the draft when he was selected Sunday by the Washington Nationals as a competitive balance pick that was 39th overall and the final of nine selections between the first and second rounds. Centerfielder Rodney Green Jr. was taken on Monday by the Oakland Athletics in the fourth round with the 104th pick overall and Christian Becerra was picked Tuesday by the Minnesota Twins in the 12th round with the 368th pick overall.

Galan was the fourth Cal player all time selected by the Rays.
