Bears Thrash Penguins 5-0

BERKELEY - Malcolm Zalayet scored the game-winning goal and Alfredo Ortiz netted a brace for his first goals as a Golden Bear, as the California men's soccer team routed Dominican University 5-0 on Monday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.

Senior forward Arik Duncan scored his first goal of the season and freshman midfielder Israel Cortez scored his first goal as a Bear, as Cal improved to 3-4-0 and handed the Penguins (3-1-0) their first loss.

Three Cal goalkeepers - starter Marco Brougher, newcomer Thomas Grimes and freshman Ryan Savoie - combined for the shutout.

Zalayet, who scored a goal for the second straight game, now paces Cal in points with six, is tied with Ortiz for the team lead in goals (2) and is tied with Duncan for the team high in assists (2).

"It was good to get that confidence back," Zalayet said. "We had been unable to finish out games and create a lot of goalscoring opportunities. I was glad we were able to do that today, and that was the main thing we were working on – shutout, lots of goals, score first."

The freshman forward did just that, score first, after settling a cross from Duncan and slotting the ball past goalkeeper Alejandro Reyes in the fifth minute. Less than one minute later, Duncan scored from 15 yards out to make the score 2-0.

Ortiz scored his first in the 11th minute, bending a free kick over the Dominican wall and inside the far post. At 12:08, the junior forward scored his second with a 22-yard blast to give the Bears a 4-0 advantage.

Cal outshot the Penguins 3-2 the rest of the first half and settled for a 4-0 lead at the break.

In the 50th minute, freshman midfielder Eli Wachs crossed into the Penguin penalty area as a sloth of Bears crashed into the six-yard box. Cortez hammered the ball into the net to cap the scoring in Cal's 5-0 victory.

Brougher got the start in goal and made one save, while Grimes, in his first action as a Bear, made two saves in almost 34 minutes and Savoie, also in his debut, made one save in less than seven minutes.

"It's good for us to get a bounce back from our previous results and get that winning sensation in our bodies again, and also it's an opportunity for guys to find their rhythm individually and an opportunity for guys to just get their feet on the field," Cal head coach Leonard Griffin said. "There are a lot of takeaways, a lot of positives from this game. I'm really happy with the group in total for their performance.

"As strikers, it was great to see Malcolm and Arik get on the board again. Strikers, sometimes they just need that momentum, they need that one or two to be firing on all cylinders. Hopefully that'll keep them going. Alfredo is another one with 'end product' in his game and someone who has the ability to finish or make that final pass. For him to score two today was huge. Israel works extremely hard, and we were really happy he got on the end of one today.

"We put three goalkeepers into the game, and it was fantastic for them collectively to get that shutout. A lot of guys got their first opportunities as Golden Bears and a lot of them made the most of it, and I was really happy to see it."

The Bears return to their ACC schedule when they host Virginia on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT at Edwards Stadium.
