Bears Complete Hawaii Campaign On Sunday
Cal dominated singles Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Spring Invitational to complete its first tournament of the year. The Bears were 7-1 in singles on the last day of the annual Hawaii event, with sophomore Tiziana-Marie Schomburg and freshman Greta Greco Lucchina each finishing with a 3-0 record at the UH Tennis Complex in Honlulu.

Schomburg defeated Hawaii's Hannah Galindo 6-2, 6-3 on Sunday, while Greco Lucchina bested the Rainbow Wahine's Emma Forgac 6-1, 6-1. Senior Jessica Alsola won 6-4, 6-2 over UH's Peppi Ramstedt, and all four of the nationally ranked Bears posted wins over their Hawaii counterparts – 35th-ranked Katja Wiersholm beat Sheena Masuda 6-4, 6-2, 63rd-ranked Lan Mi topped Ana Vilcek 6-3, 6-0, 71st-ranked Mao Musika bested Makeilah Nepomuceno 6-2, 6-4 and 81st-ranked Berta Passola Folch knocked off Nikola Homolkova 6-4, 6-3.

Cal also played doubles in Hawaii, claiming one victory Sunday when Lucchina and Mushika beat Masuda and Ramstedt 6-3.

Poll Position
Cal collected six rankings – four in singles and two in doubles – in the ITA polls released Dec. 3. Senior Katja Wiersholm – who earned the first singles All-America honor of her career in the fall – is ranked 35th in singles, senior Lan Mi is 63rd, sophomore Mao Mushika is 71st and junior Berta Passola Folch is 81st. In doubles, the pair of Mushika and senior Jessica Alsola is ranked 24th, while Mi and Passola Folch are ranked 48th.

Cal Ends Fall At NCAA Championships
Cal completed the fall half of the season in sterling fashion at the NCAA individual championships in November. Katja Wiersholm's All-America campaign capped Cal's postseason at Baylor. The veteran Bear reached the NCAA Singles Championship round of 16 in the deepest run of her career. She was one of four Bears – including Lan Mi, Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika – to compete in Waco, Texas, with Mi and Mushika playing in singles for the first time and claiming first-round victories. Cal also tied for the most entrants (3) in the NCAA singles field.

The Bears swept their first-round singles matches, with Wiersholm defeating Wichita State's Xin Tong Wang 4-4 (ret.), Mi beating South Carolina's Kaitlyn Carnicella 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 and Mushika besting Auburn's 82nd-ranked Angella Okutoyi 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, Wiersholm topped South Carolina's 10th-ranked Sarah Hamner 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(6), while Mi fell to Ohio State's 23rd-ranked Luciana Perry 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 and Mushika dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result to Stanford's fourth-ranked Connie Ma. In the round of 16, Wiersholm – who garnered All-America status by advancing to that round – fell to Auburn's 32nd-ranked DJ Bennett 7-6(5), 6-3.

Alsola and Mushika – who had each played in previous NCAA Doubles Championship with different partners – earned more playing time together in their first season as a doubles pair by reaching the national tournament. The duo fell to UCLA's top-seeded Kimmi Hance and Elise Wagle 6-3, 6-3 in the first round.
