Meeks Earns Second Conference Title With ACC Hammer Win

Savva, Freeman Also Claim Hammer Medals On Day 1

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Two-and-a-half months after winning the women's weight throw title with a new facility record at the ACC Indoor Championships, California track & field's Giavonna Meeks treated spectators with a repeat performance in the women's hammer at the ACC Outdoor Championships, shattering the Kentner Stadium facility record with a personal-best throw of 67.86m (222-8) on her way to her second ACC title. Meeks became the third woman in Cal history to win a conference title in the event, following alumnae Jennifer Joyce (2002) and Camryn Rogers (2019, 2021-22).

Freshman Valentina Savva joined Meeks on the podium with a second-place throw of 67.63m/221-10, improving by 11 inches from her original mark of 67.34m/220-11 after a successful protest from the Golden Bears earned her an additional attempt. Both Audrey Jacobs (fifth place, 64.16m/210-6) and Adrianna Coleman (sixth place, 61.72m/202-6) also scored for Cal, while Amanda Spear rounded out the group with a ninth-place mark of 58.43m (191-8). All five of the Bears' entries reached the nine-woman final.

"This was a great day for our women," said assistant coach Mohamad Saatara. "Giavonna keeps showing consistent improvement throughout the season. I am grateful for the energy and competitive spirit that our ladies showed today."

Cal also featured a medalist in the men's hammer throw, as Jared Freeman claimed bronze with a throw of 66.52m (218-3) to mark the fourth-straight year that a Bear has made the podium in the event. Freshman Kai Barham also scored in the hammer with a seventh-place 61.70m (202-5), while Charlie Dang earned a point in the men's javelin with an eighth-place 59.86m (196-5). Ali Sahaida picked up two more points for the women with her seventh-place finish of 4.22m (13-10) in the pole vault.

In the women's heptathlon, Torre Anderson collected 3100 points through the first four events, starting off her day with a heat win in the 100m hurdles (14.51) and ending it with another in the 200m (25.12w, a wind-aided personal best). She also matched her personal best in the high jump with a clearance of 1.62m (5-3.75).

Two Bears qualified for Saturday's finals on the track. Loreal Wilson earned the final qualifying time in the 400m hurdles, finishing the race in 58.77, while 1500m runner Garrett MacQuiddy posted the second-fastest final 400m split on the way to a time of 3:40.21 – just missing his heat's automatic qualifying spot by .03 seconds but earning the third-fastest time of any competitor to advance.
