Cal Downs UC Davis 7-2

Freshmen Fuel Bears’ 3rd Straight Win

DAVIS— Fueled by five freshmen arms, the California baseball team won its third straight game Wednesday night defeating UC Davis 7-2 on the road at Dobbins Field.

The Golden Bears improved their record to 5-3 while the Aggies' home-opening loss dropped them to 3-5.

The story of the game was the production by Cal's newcomers as five consecutive first-year pitchers tossed the first eight innings of the game and a sixth rookie was responsible for the game-winning run.

Cal got a couple of runs in the early innings, scoring on a double play in the second and getting a timely RBI single by designated-hitter Daniel Murillo in the top of third to go up 2-0.

Freshman Trent Roach made his second collegiate start and had a solid showing with a career-high 3.1 innings of work. He faced the minimum the first time through the Aggies' order but allowed a game-tying two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth that would end his night. The right-hander ended with two earned, two hits, a walk, and his first two career strikeouts.

In Roach's relief came Tanner Grove and Jett Wright who covered the middle innings and allowed no hits and no runs while each striking out a pair of Aggies. Tanner Grove picked up his first collegiate win allowing just one base runner in his 1.2 innings of work.

After a couple of scoreless innings a pair of new Bears broke the 2-2 tie with first baseman Gannon Snyder roping a two-out triple to right field to extend the inning and bring shortstop Jett Kenady to the plate. The freshman chose the perfect time to crush his first collegiate home run and did so over the left field wall on a 1-0 count.

Cal made it a 5-2 ballgame in the top of the seventh with catcher Hideki Prather extending his hitstreak to six games with an RBI single that scored Ethan Kodama from first.

Take Kreis, who had a high-leverage save in the rubber match at UCI, entered in the bottom of the seventh with two on and no outs. After putting the tying run on via a four-pitch walk the freshman got a pop up, a full-count swinging strikeout, and a harmless fly out to hang yet another zero on the scoreboard.

Cade Colombara and Cole Clark shutdown the final two innings of the game with both righties going hitless with two strikeouts each.

Kodama, who ended the game 2-for-3 with two runs and a walk added some insurance in the ninth on an RBI double, as did Murillo who found yet another timely RBI single to make the final score 7-2.

Cal now has a day off before taking on Sacramento State in a home-and-home series that begins on Friday at Stu Gordon Stadium at 6 p.m. on ACCNX. Saturday's game will be played up in Sacramento at 2 p.m. on ESPN+ and Sunday's finale will be back in Berkeley at 1 p.m.
