SACRAMENTO— The California baseball team claimed its series with Sacramento State on Saturday winning game two 8-2 at John Smith Field in Sacramento.
The Golden Bears have won their last two series and five straight games as they improved to 7-3, while the Hornets dropped their third in a row to fall to 3-7.
Senior starter
Ethan Foley (2-0) had yet another impressive outing tossing a career-high six full innings to get the win. The right hander scattered eight hits with two earned runs and three strikeouts and did not walk a single batter. The Bears are 3-0 in Foley starts and 4-0 in Saturday games this season.
The Cal offense got going early as its first four batters all reached including three singles to start the game. Designated hitter
Hideki Prather extended his hit streak to eight games with a lead-off single and came around to score on an RBI single by
Daniel Murillo.
The Hornets hung a two of their own in the bottom of the second scoring a pair of runs on two-out rally, but Cal got that lead right back in the top of the third. Third baseman
Cade Campbell crushed his second home run in the last 24 hours, this time a two-run shot to put the Bears up 4-2.
Campbell struck again in the top of the fifth knocking in an RBI single to make him 6-for-8 with four RBI, two home runs, a double, a walk and three runs in the series.
Right hander
Otto Espinoza entered in the seventh to back up Foley for the third time this season and earned his second straight scoreless save.The freshman went tossed three innings and allowed just two hits and a walk while striking out five.
Cal added insurance in the top of the ninth with Murillo and second baseman
Jacob French each collecting RBI doubles to cap off the Bears' scoring efforts. Both ended the day 3-for-5 with French scoring three runs and Murillo collecting two RBI to give him a team-leading 10 on the year.
The Bears and Hornets return to Berkeley tomorrow for the series finale at Stu Gordon Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on ACCNX.
