BERKELEY — For the second time this season the California baseball team had its momentum slowed by San Jose State as the Spartans defeated the Golden Bears 10-7 Friday at Stu Gordon Stadium to end a four-game win streak.
SJSU (14-21) collected 11 hits and capitalized on three errors and base-running miscues committed by Cal (18-17) to sweep the two-game season series.
Freshman
Jett Wright earned the first start of his young career and had an eventful outing as after allowing the first two runners to reach in the first got out of the jam with just six total pitches thrown. He ended with 2.1 innings and two earned runs with the Spartans scoring three in the third and was charged with his first career loss.
Down 3-0 and going hitless their first time through the order, the Bears got on the board in the fourth with second baseman
Jacob French collecting an infield single and his former San Francisco State teammate
Daniel Murillo sending a two-run blast to left field. The first baseman's seventh home run of the year came off the bat at 105 mph and went 369 feet to cut the lead to one.
The two teams traded punches through the middle innings with San Jose State putting up two in the top of the fifth followed by a two-spot in the bottom half by Cal with French and freshman shortstop
Jett Kenady collecting a pair of sac-flies to make it 5-4.
After two more Spartan runs came across in the sixth and another scored in the seventh to put SJSU up four, the Bears immediately answered with back-to-back RBI doubles by
Hideki Prather and
Jacob French to cut the lead to 8-6. Cal put the tying runs on the bases paths and brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth but could not bring them in.
Trent Roach was the fourth freshman to take the bump for Cal and had a very strong outing allowing zero earned runs in 1.2 innings of work although two unearned runs scored in the ninth to give the Spartans a 10-6 lead that they would hold on to for good, despite a monster solo home run in the bottom of the ninth from French to make the final score 10-7.
French ended the night 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored giving him his third three-hit effort in his last four games. Murillo added a pair of hits and
Kalen Applefield tallied a hit and two runs.
The Bears are back at The Stu this weekend to host Louisville in a weekend series that begins Friday. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. on ACCNX.
