Taichi Nakao Draws Bases Loaded Walk To Plate Ethan Kodama With Game-Winning Run

BERKELEY - Taichi Nakao drew a bases-loaded walk on four straight pitches in the bottom of the 10th inning to plate Ethan Kodama and lift the California baseball team to a 4-3 nonconference victory over San Francisco (19-19, 10-5 WCC) at Stu Gordon Stadium on Wednesday.

The Bears scored their 10th inning run without a hit, taking advantage of two hit batsmen and two walks by losing pitcher Paul Wheeler (0-1). Wheeler hit Kodama with the second pitch of his outing then walked Joshua Hanson on four in a row to give the Bears runners on first and second with no outs. Gannon Snyder moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt before Wheeler hit Kalen Applefield to load the bases.

Cal (21-19, 6-12 ACC) escaped its own jam in the top of the 10th after back-to-back singles to start the frame from Eddison Esquivel and TJ Rogers put Dons on first and second with no outs. But Ryan Spalliero steadied and struck out Brendan Burke for the first out before being relieved by Ethan Foley. The runners moved to second and third on wild pitch from Foley before he struck out Trevor Busby for out two and then retired Jayden Garrison on a slow roller that Cal third baseman Cade Campbell rushed in on and threw just in time to retire Garrison at first.

Nakao (2-4, 2B, BB, RBI) was the only Cal player with more than one hit and also doubled for the Bears' lone extra-base knock, while Kodama scored two of the Bears' four runs.

Tino Vasell (2-4) was the only San Francisco player with more than one hit, while Myles Kallinger had the game's only long ball when he led off the game with a shot over the left field wall on the 13th pitch of his at bat against Cal starter Jordy Lopez. Kallinger also had an RBI groundout in the top of the ninth to send the game into extra innings.

The other San Francisco run came on Busby's sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Cal got its first three runs on an RBI groundout by Applefield in the second, an error on a failed pickoff attempt in the fifth, and an error on Nakao's two-out ground ball in the sixth.

Both teams used eight pitchers.

Cal (21-18, 6-12 ACC) will visit Miami (30-11, 10-8 ACC) in a three-game ACC series this Friday-Sunday (4 pm, 3 pm, Noon) with all three games on ACCNX/ESPN+. The Bears have won five of their last six conference contests, sweeping a series at Pitt before taking two-of-three at home against Louisville.
