BERKELEY— Starting pitcher
Gavin Eddy fanned a career-high 10 batters in the California baseball team's 6-2 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday at Stu Gordon Stadium.
Although he was charged with his first loss since early April, Eddy (6-3) had another solid showing, going six full innings with just one earned run on five hits and a walk while hitting double-digit strikeouts for the first time. The sophomore has now put together three straight quality starts and has allowed just seven earned runs in his last 20.0 innings
After going six-up, six-down to start the game, the Hokies (25-20, 13-13 ACC) put together a two-out rally to take 4-0 lead, which would be enough against a Cal offense that continues to play short-handed due to injuries.
The Golden Bears (23-23, 7-16 ACC) failed to get a baserunner aboard their first time through the order but broke through in the fourth inning with first baseman
Daniel Murillo reaching on a single and scoring on an RBI single by designated hitter
Lawson Olmstead.
After VT extended its lead to 5-1 in the seventh, the Bears answered with a threat in the bottom of the eighth, loading the bases but were unable to cash in. Cal would not go quietly though, as after a sixth run scored for the Hokies in the ninth, the Bears punched back with a run of their own. Freshman shortstop
Brady Errecart led off with the first extra-base hit of his career doubling to the left field wall and was driven in on a pinch-hit RBI single by
Kalen Applefield.
Errecart now has three hits in the series after picking up his first collegiate knock in last night's game. Murillo turned in the sole multi-hit effort going 2-for-5.
Senior
Cole Clark had a solid outing out of the pen for Cal going two full innings with one earned on two hits and four strikeouts.
The series wraps up tomorrow with Game 3 set for 1:05 p.m. PT on ACCNX.
