Volleyball Adds 2-Time All-American Portia Sherman

Outside Hitter Spent 4 Seasons With Cal Beach Volleyball

The California volleyball team has added two-time AVCA First-Team All-American Portia Sherman of the California beach volleyball team to its squad, head coach Jen Malcom announced Friday. Sherman, a 5-foot-9 native of Goleta, will bolster the Golden Bears' outside hitter group for the 2026 season.

"Portia will be a great addition to the team by bringing a winning mentality and competitiveness from her time with Cal beach volleyball," Malcom said. "She has proven that she is a winner time and time again on the beach, and we know that will translate into the indoor game. Portia will add depth to our outside position as well as ball-handling skills in our back row. She is eager to get into the gym and start preparing for the fall season after finishing up her beach career last week at NCAAs."

Along with doubles partner Emma Donley, Sherman holds the Cal beach volleyball program records in single-season wins (31) and career wins (59). The two-time First-Team All-MPSF duo ended the 2026 regular season as the nation's No. 4 overall pair according to Truvolley and helped lead the Bears to the NCAA quarterfinals in the team's fifth consecutive NCAA Championships appearance.

Sherman and Donley won gold with Team USA at the 2025 Junior Pan Am Games and the North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA) U23 Continental Tour, also earning a bronze medal at that year's Senior NORCECA Continental Tour.

Before arriving at Cal, Sherman played indoor volleyball, beach volleyball and basketball at Dos Pueblos High School, earning Channel League MVP honors indoors and leading her squad to its first league title in 10 years.
