One of America's greatest sprinters, Eddie Hart set two world records in 1972, running the 100-meter dash in 9.9 and helping the U.S. Olympic team to a gold medal in Munich by contributing in the 400-meter relay (38.19). He missed a chance for a gold in the 100 meters when he was misinformed about the time of his heat and missed qualifying for the final, where he would have been the favorite. Hart helped Cal to the 1970 NCAA track & field title, which it later vacated, by winning the 100-yard dash in 9.4 and anchoring Cal's winning 400 relay team (40.3). He captured the Pac-8 100 title (9.4) in 1970 and was the NCAA runner-up in the 100 yard in 1971 (9.5) and bronze medalist in the 220y (20.9). Hart anchored Cal’s 4x100-meter relay that set a Big Meet record in 1970 (39.7), a mark that stood for more than 40 years. He ranked among the top 10 in the United States in the 100 meters five times from 1970-79.
