California Athletics Hall of Fame
The winningest coach in Cal track and field history, Erv Hunt spent 30 years, from 1973-2002, building the Bears into a national power. A two-sport standout at Fresno State who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1970, Hunt returned to Berkeley in 1973 to take over the program and quickly established himself as one of the finest hurdles coaches in the country. He produced five individual NCAA champions — including Chris Huffins and Bevan Hart in the decathlon — along with 50 conference titlists and 90 All-Americans, while guiding the Bears to multiple top-10 national finishes and posting a career winning percentage of .765 with the men's team and .700 with the women's. Hunt's excellence on the track earned him international recognition as well: in 1996, he served as head coach of the U.S. men's team at the Atlanta Olympics, where the Americans won 16 medals, 10 of them gold. He was later inducted into the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
