California Athletics Hall of Fame
A four-time All-American who never left Cal without a national title, Mike MacDonald helped the Bears win four national championships from 2000-04, including an undefeated 21-0 season in 2002, and was named tournament MVP in his final championship match in 2004. He went on to represent the United States in three consecutive Rugby World Cups (2003, '07, '11) and retired in 2014 as the then-all-time record holder for U.S. national team appearances with 67 caps — a mark since surpassed but which still ranks second in Eagles history. At the 2011 World Cup, he broke two U.S. records in the same tournament, becoming the most-capped Eagle in history and making his 11th career World Cup appearance, the most by any American player. MacDonald also had a decorated professional career in England, playing for Worcester Warriors and Leeds Carnegie, where he was twice named Player of the Year and served as team captain. He later returned to Cal as an assistant rugby coach for nine seasons.
