Los Angeles, Calif. -
After a quick start, resulting in four unanswered goals in the first quarter, the third-ranked Bears went on to defeat the seventh-ranked Loyola Marymount Lions, 9-3 at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. Junior Attila Banhidy led the Bears with three goals on the afternoon.
Chris Lathrop and Banhidy scored two goals a piece in the first period to pace the Bears to an early 4-0 lead. The Lions would cut the lead to two goals in the second period on goals by freshman Endre Rex-Kiss and junior Tamas Szego.
The Bears, however, would match the Lions goal-for-goal in both the second and the third periods, and then add two unanswered goals in the fourth to improve to 13-4 on the season. The Lions, who defeated sixth-ranked Pepperdine earlier in the week, fall to 11-12 on the year.
It was a hard fought game from the start with the teams combining for 15 total ejections on the day. The Bears would capitalize on the extra-man advantage three times, including Banhidy's third goal of the game in the second period.
The Lions would score two extra-man goals themselves, including junior Ryan Chapatte's goal in the third period that cut the lead to 7-3. Greg Panawek and Brian Rieben would score in the fourth for the final margin of 9-3.
Cal will return to action next, as it travels to top-ranked Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 2 at noon before hosting UC Davis on Sunday, Nov. 3 at noon at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley.
