Cal's 70 Points Second Most In Modern Era of Program
Cal's 70 points today is the second most in the modern era (1937) by Golden Bear football. The 1991 Bears beat Pacific, 86-24, on Sept. 7, 1991, at Memorial Stadium. Before 1937, Cal posted 70 or more points five times, with the most being 127 in a 127-0 against Saint Mary's, Oct. 9, 1920, in Berkeley. The 70 points today is 34.8 percent of the 201 points Cal had in all of 2001. Cal's 460 total yards of offense today far surpassed last year's average of 349.6.

Cal Records Largest Margin of Victory in 8 seasons
Cal's win by 48 points is the largest margin of victory for the Golden Bears since their 55-0 defeat of San Jose State, Oct. 1, 1994, in Berkeley. What a difference a year has made for Cal in season openers. In 2001 against Illinois, the Golden Bears lost to Illinois, 44-17, (-27), which is a 75 point swing compared to today's season opener.

Bears Snap Eight-Game Home Losing Streak
Cal's victory today snapped an eight-game home losing streak with its last victory at Memorial Stadium coming Oct. 14, 2000, vs. UCLA (46-38 in 3OTS).

Boller Moves Up to 6th on Cal Career Passing Chart
With 213 yards against Baylor, QB Kyle Boller passed Mike Pawlawski (5,181 yards, 1988-91) to become No. 6 on Cal's career passing yardage list. Boller's 13-yard pass to Jonathan Makonnen in the first quarter (10:31 on the clock), gave him 5,182. He finished today's game with 5,378 yards, 927 yards shy of No. 5 Dave Barr (6,305). Overall, Boller completed 18 of 26 passes (69.2 percent), for his best percentage in a game in his collegiate career. He also threw for 3 TDs and ran for another. Boller's record for TD passes in a game is 4 vs. Washington, Sept. 29, 2001 (4 passing TDs).

Igber Gaining on No. 6 in Cal Career Rushing
TB Joe Igber rushed for 65 yards today on 13 carries, giving him 2,059 yards for his career on 450 carries. Igber currently ranks seventh all-time in school history but is gaining on No. 6 Lindsey Chapman (1991-93), who had 2190 yards rushing (444 carries).

Points Off Turnovers Most in 4 Seasons
Cal scored 28 points following Baylor turnovers today - three TDs after interceptions by James Bethea, Matt Nixon and Jemeel Powell and one TD after a fumble recovery by Nixon. The 28 points off TOs is the most since Cal scored 21 points off TOs (1 fumble recovery, 2 INTs) vs. Washington State Sept. 26, 1998, in Berkeley.

Golden Bears Turn Turnover Tide in Their Favor
In 2001, Cal forced only 18 turnovers, which was the fewest in school history. Today alone, Cal forced five turnovers (4 INTs, 1 FR). All of last season, Cal had 8 INTs.

Bears Open Game With TD
Cal's Kyle Boller to Terrell Williams to David Gray for a 71-yard pass play was the first Cal TD scored on the first play of a game since Sept. 4, 1999, when Marcus Fields ran for a 49-yard TD against Rutgers at Berkeley. This was Williams' first career TD pass. He is 3-of-4 in his career passing for 93-yards passing and 1 INT.

Noting the 35 Cal Points
The 35 points scored by Cal in the first quarter is the most ever in a quarter in school history. The old mark was 29 vs. Pacific (2nd quarter), Sept. 7, 1991.

Noting the 42 Combined Points in First Quarter
The 42 points Cal and Baylor combined to score in the first quarter (35-7) ties for the second most combined points in a quarter in Cal history. It ties Cal (21) vs. Oregon (21) (4th), Oct. 14, 1995. The record is 43 - Cal (22) vs. Navy (21) (2nd), 12/25/96 (Aloha Bowl).

Noting the 49-Point Effort in the First Half
The 49 points Cal scored in the first half is the second most the Golden Bears have ever scored in a half. The record of 51 points was set in the first half vs. Pacific, Sept. 7, 1991.

Nixon Returns INT 100-Yds for TD
Matt Nixon's 100-yard TD interception was the fourth time in school history that a Cal player has returned an interception 100 yards for a TD. Deltha O'Neal was the last Cal player to accomplish the feat, Nov. 20, 1999, against Stanford. Jim Jurkovich also had one vs. USC, on Nov. 9, 1940, and John Hardy did it at Wisconsin, Sept. 8, 1990.

Cal Bear Tidbits
CB James Bethea's 34-yard interception with 13:50 left in the first quarter was the first of his career...Bethea also had a 62-yard KOR to start the second quarter, the longest by a Cal player since Deltha O'Neal's 100-yard KOR at Stanford, Nov. 20, 1999....WR Geoff McArthur's doubled his career TD output from two to four...Joe Igber's 8-yard TD reception with 7:19 left in the first quarter was his 5th career TD reception and 14th overall TD of his career...Powell grabbed his second interception of the game with 13:16 left in the second quarter, giving him 7 for his career...DE Tully Banta-Cain recovered a fumble in the second quarter, which led to a Cal TD, and his other FR in his career came in 2000 vs. Utah and also led to a TD....eight different Cal players caught a pass today.

Other Career Firsts
Freshmen TB Marcus O'Keith, RB Chris Manderino and David Gray all scored their first career TDs today.

BAYLOR FINAL GAME NOTES

After today's loss, Baylor's lead in the all-time series with Cal was trimmed to 2-1.

With today's loss, Baylor's all-time record vs. current members of Pac-10 conference is 12-10.

Baylor is now 6-3 all time in games played in state of California.

Baylor is now 65-31-5 all time in season openers after today's loss.

Cal's 70 points are the most allowed by a Baylor team in 89 years (since a 77-0 defeat to Texas in 1913) and the third-most in school history.

Senior wideout Reggie Newhouse finished with 8 receptions, 164 yards and one touchdown. The 164 yards marks his career-best single-season total, and his sixth career 100-yard receiving performance.

With 164 yards, Newhouse moved into fourth place on Baylor's all-time receiving yards list with 1,576 career yards (passed Matt Clark - 1,480).

Newhouse's TD catch moved him into a tie for fourth place all-time at Baylor with 13 career scoring receptions (tied with Bruce Davis).

In his third career game played, Aaron Karas came off the bench to throw for 211 yards (14-for 27) and one TD. It was his second 200-yard passing performance (331 vs. SIU last season).

Three Bears made their first career starts today vs. Cal: Sophomore Tyson Hampton (cornerback), redshirt freshman Maurice Lane (safety) and junior Shane Williams (tight end).

13 players made their Baylor debut today: Willie Andrews, Rashad Armstrong, Larry Bynum, Dominick Cravens, Chris DeLeenheer, Jontue Fears-Hayes, Tyson Hampton, Maurice Lane, Lequalan McDonald, Glen Oskin, Charles Radford, J.T. Thompson and James Washington.

In his first career game, junior Charles Radford finished with ? catches and ?? yards.

In his first career game, junior Rashad Armstrong ran for 32 yards on 13 carries.

The 85-yard touchdown completion from Aaron Karas to Reggie Newhouse to end the first quarter ties as the fifth-longest passing play in school history (longest since 1996).

The 13-yard second-quarter reception by J.T. Thompson was his career first.

Rashad Armstrong's six-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter was the first of his career.
