BERKELEY, CA - The California men's water polo team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, but the No. 4-ranked Golden Bears (10-5, 0-2) could not hold on as they fell to No. 1-ranked UCLA (13-2, 1-0), 10-6, Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. It was Cal's fourth consecutive loss, all to teams ranked higher than the Bears.
Cal dominated the first period, outscoring the Bruins, 3-0, on a pair of goals by sophomore John Mann and a goal by sophomore Brian Bacharach. UCLA came roaring back, however, outscoring the Bears, 3-0, in the second period on two goals by Albert Garcia and goal by Logan Powell with 14 seconds left in the half. Powell had gathered in a ball that had been deflected off of Cal goalie Nate Bennett and driver Zac Monsees.
UCLA ran away with the match in the third period, outscoring Cal, 4-1, on two goals by Grant Zider and goals by Peter Belden and Josh Hewko. The Bears' lone goal in the third was by freshman Michael Sharf with 2:52 in the third. The Bruins extended their lead to 9-4 in the fourth period on back-to-back goals by center Ted Peck. Cal finally broke UCLA's 5-0 run on Bacharach's second goal with 3:28 left in the match. The two teams then shared goals, with the Bruins' Brett Ormsby tallying a goal at 3:08 left, and Bear freshman Jeff Tyrrell scoring with 1:33 left in the contest for the final 10-6 margin.
Bennett finished the match with 12 saves, while UCLA goalie Joseph Axelrad had nine saves. Cal had upended the Bruins earlier this season, 10-9, in the third-place match of the SoCal Tournament, Sept. 19.
The Bears will next host No. 5-ranked UC Santa Barbara, Sunday, Oct. 17 at 12 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
