No. 5 Cal Men's Water Polo Defeats No. 6 Loyola Marymount, 9-6

BERKELEY, CA - Led by three goals apiece from sophomores John Mann and Brian Bacharach, the No. 5-ranked California men's water polo team (12-7) upended No. 6-ranked Loyola Marymount (13-8), 9-6, in a non-conference match Friday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Mann was instrumental in getting the Golden Bears off to a fast start, scoring the first three goals of the match - 3:48 in the first period, 2:05 in the first, and 6:30 in the second period. From there, Cal controlled the contest, taking a 4-1 lead at halftime. After Mann's three goals, Tyler Swanson got the Lions on the board with a score at 6:02 left in the half. Bacharach countered with his first of three goals at 3:02 in the second period.

The Bears continued the pressure, outscoring LMU, 3-1 in the third period behind goals from freshman Jeff Tyrrell, Bacharach and sophomore Brian Kinsel. Scott Marshall accounted for the Lions lone score in the third period on a shot with 1:35 left in the quarter.

Loyola Marymount mounted a slight comeback in the fourth period. Dan Easton and Brian McShane scored to get the Lions within, 7-4, but Cal came back with back-to-back goals from sophomore Andrija Vasiljevic and another score by Bacharach to make the score, 9-4. LMU made the final margin, 9-6, on a goal from McShane with 1:14 left, and a score by Endre Rex-Kiss with 36 seconds left in the match.

The Bears next host Pepperdine in an MPSF match, Saturday, Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
