No. 3 Cal Men's Water Polo Tops UC Davis and Loyola Marymount at NorCal Tournament.

STOCKTON, CA - The No. 3-ranked California men's water polo team (10-1) defeated No. 15 UC Davis, 12-5, and No. 11-ranked Loyola Marymount, 8-4, in the first day of the NorCal Tournament at the University of the Pacific. The Golden Bears will next face No. 2-ranked and Bay Area rival Stanford Sunday at 11:40 a.m. at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on the Pacific campus.

Cal is the defending 2003 NorCal Tournament champions, upsetting then-No. 1 ranked USC, 8-6, in the semifinals, and No. 2 ranked Stanford, 10-9, in sudden death overtime in the title match last season.

In the victory Saturday over UC Davis, Cal was led by sophomore center John Mann's three goals, followed by two goals apiece from sophomore driver Brian Bacharach, sophomore center defender Marty Matthies, senior center defender Keola Richardson and freshman driver Mike Hayes. Sophomore center Brian Kinsel added a goal and junior goalie Nate Bennett finished with four saves.

It was the Bears' third victory over UC Davis this season, defeating the Aggies, 12-5, Sept. 12 at Davis and 19-7 at the SoCal Tournament Sept. 18.

In Cal's victory over Loyola Marymount, the Bears were led by sophomore Andrija Vasiljevic's four goals, and two goals each by Bacharah and freshman Michael Sharf. Bennett finished with seven saves against the Lions.
