BERKELEY - The No. 13 California field hockey team saw its program record-tying eight-game winning streak come to and end against Boston College, 1-0, on Saturday at Maxwell Family Field.

The Bears (12-3, 4-1 NorPac West Division) hadn't lost since a 1-0 defeat at Southwest Missouri State on Sept. 8. The eight-game winning streak ties a record set by the 2001 Cal squad.

The Eagles (9-4, 1-2 Big East) scored the game's lone goal when reserve forward Crystal Frates took a feed from backfielder Kristen Madden and slid a score past Cal goalkeeper Kelly Knapp at 29:28.

Cal outshot the Eagles 11-0 in the second half after recording just one shot in the first. Forward Valentina Godfrid led Cal in shots with four.

Thursday's loss was Cal's first regulation defeat this season. The Bears' other two losses - at SWMS and to Louisville (2-1, Sept. 4) - were both in overtime.

Knapp recorded four saves, all in the first half. Eagles' keeper Jillian Savoy made seven second-half saves to preserve the victory.

The Bears return to action on Friday for their annual alumni game. Match time at Maxwell Family Field is 7 p.m. Cal opens a three-game road trip in Ann Arbor, Mich., against No. 7 Michigan on Oct. 22.
