BERKELEY, Calif. -
No. 4 California took No. 1 Arizona into extra innings Saturday afternoon in Pac-10 play but was unable to recover from a two-run home run in the eighth inning, falling 1-0 to the visiting Wildcats at Levine-Fricke Field. The Bears' record dropped to 37-7 (4-4 Pac-10) while Arizona improved to 42-1 (6-0 Pac-10).
Arizona's freshman CF Caitlin Lowe doubled to left field to open the eighth frame before senior C Mackenzie Vandergeest, two outs later, launched a home run into the left field parking lot to put the Wildcats up 2-0. The Bears were unable to mount a comeback in the bottom half of the inning despite a leadoff walk for junior SS Chelsea Spencer.
Sophomore P Alicia Hollowell (29-0) recorded the win for Arizona, scattering two hits early in the game and striking out 10 Bears. Sophomore P Kristina Thorson (17-2) received the loss for Cal, allowing five hits while striking out four.
The Bears host Arizona for one more game this weekend at Levine-Fricke Field tomorrow, Sunday, April 18, at 1:00 p.m.
