DAVIS, CA - Sophomore John Mann scored five goals as No.4-ranked Cal (5-0) broke open a close match midway through the third period with seven straight goals as the Golden Bears defeated No.16 UC Davis (2-3), 12-5 Sunday afternoon in front of 352 fans at the Schaal Aquatic Center.

Cal scored the first three goals of the game, all coming in the opening four minutes, to jump to an early lead. Aggie junior Conor Duignan put UC Davis on the board late in the period before Mann's second goal of the quarter gave Cal the 4-1 lead. By halftime the Aggies cut the lead to 5-3 on goals from Patrick Jacobson and Josh McNeely.

UC Davis narrowed the deficit even further in the third period when Jacobson got ahead of the field on a counterattack, making it a 5-4 Cal lead. UC Davis got no closer as Brian Bacharach, Mann and Andrija Vasiljevic all scored within a minute and a half stretch to push the Bear lead to 8-4 late in the period. Mann added his fourth of the game late in the quarter to make it 9-4 Cal after three periods.

Cal added three more goals in the fourth before Jacobson closed out the scoring in the final minute with his third goal of the contest.

Cal were led by Mann's five goals, while Bacharach and Vasiljevic each added two on the day. Junior Nate Bennett made seven saves in the Cal net while senior captain Derek Schauffler added one save.

"Against a good team it only takes a minute or two for things to change in a hurry," said Aggie head coach Steve Doten (who played at Cal from 1986-88) referring to the stretch late in the third when Cal turned a one-point lead into a four-goal advantage in just over a minute. "I wish I had those two minutes back. We have to put together a full 28 minutes of play. You can't make those kinds of mistakes against a good team like Cal."

Cal will next be in action on Sept. 18-19 at the Southern California Tournament in Los Angeles.
