LOS ANGELES, CA -
Sophomore driver Brian Bacharach scored the game-winning goal with 1:18 remaining as the No. 4-ranked California men's water polo team (8-1) defeated the No. 3 UCLA Bruins, 10-9, to place third at the SoCal Tournament. Earlier on Sunday, the Golden Bears had fallen to eventual tournament champion USC, 11-6, in the semifinals.
With the third-place match tied 8-8 after three periods, UCLA took the lead on a Josh Hewko goal with 4:24 remaining. After an ejection called against the Bruins, Cal freshman Michael Sharf completed a personal hat trick with a power play goal with 2:12 left to tie the game at 9-9, setting up Bacharach's heroics.
Bacharach and sophomore Marty Matthies finished the UCLA match with two goals apiece. Jeff Tyrrell, John Mann and Adam Haley also scored goals against the Bruins. Junior goalie Nate Bennett finished with eight saves.
Against the defending national champion Trojans in a morning match on Sunday, Cal had tied the contest, 2-2, after the first period, but were outscored 4-2 in the second and third periods. USC then controlled the match, outscoring the Bears, 5-2, in the fourth quarter for the final 11-6 margin. Sophomore Dan Werner paced Cal with two goals, followed by single goals from Tyrrell, Mann, Brian Kinsel and freshman Mike Hayes. Bennett finished with seven saves against the Trojans.
On Saturday, the Bears had defeated No. 16 UC Davis, 19-7, and No. 5-ranked UC Irvine, 7-6. Cal will next host Pacific, Friday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
